Alice Cooper Facts

Alice Cooper made an obscure lost masterpiece/monsterpiece
of an album in the late 70s called From The Inside, inspired
by his time in an asylum because he was drinking himself to
death.

Like the best and worst albums of the 70s it's super
overproduced, coming across like Meatloaf or the Phantom of
the Paradise soundtrack. But you know what? It works, and I
dare you to listen to the album and not come away with a couple
of earworms.

Aesthetically it's a mess, inspired by people he met or
imagined in the hospital, and careens between sympathy for
the subjects of his songs, and contempt/exploitation,
because of course it does, because this is Alice Cooper and
good taste is not on his menu. He is a divine idiot who has
spent much of his career blacked out making things like this
album.

The lyrics are unbelievable. Make sure to read along
with the songs, it's... an experience.

Millie and Billie is the love song of two psychopaths and
features the lines:

Billie I dream of our children
They're frightening and gruesome and sad
And I don't want them growing inside me
They're no price for the love that we have

- have there ever been *less* tasteful words in a love song?
Of course not, this is Alice Cooper.

Bonus fact: Alice's partner in that love duet is Marcy Levy,
who went on to change her name to Marcella Detroit and form
Shakespear's Sister. She's the one with the short hair and high
voice. The other one is Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama.

This has been Alice Cooper Facts, thank you for reading.

Nurse Rozetta I won't let her
Catch me peering down her sweater
Fantasizing silk suspenders on her thighs
Nurse Rozetta make me better
Secretly my eyes undress her
Let me feel your tongue depressor

I hope it's brought you the same blend of cringe and
pleasure it has me. I think my favorite song is Jackknife
Johnny, with its narratively incoherent but earnest reach
for pathos laced with classic 1970s Hammond organ stabs. The
strongest songs on the album are also the cringiest, where
he's trying to get into sentimental Eagles territory. It's
awful and I like it that way.

yeah i think jackknife johnny is the strongest cut, "all
your friends sleep in boxes while you sleep in chains", wow,
like, deep man 🤔 the last track is great too, "we're the
lunatic fringe who rusted the hinge" is so dumb but so funny

It has shall we say quality control problems in the lyrics,
which is a shame because the song ideas are fascinating,
even innovative, then he throws clunkers like that in
there.

But then he has lines like "you was washing cars down in
Dallas when the holocaust came" which neatly encapsulates
the idea of some average joe having his life torn apart
getting drafted into the hellscape of the Vietnam war.

Either he needed to be a better artist to do this material
justice, or have a tough editor to kick him in the ass.

Though if it were handled better he'd just be fuckin' Bono
and it would be boring as shit, with the mawkishness
unleavened by unintentional hilarity.

this thread reminds me of that meme where the guy is looking
at another woman, and the other woman has 'Alice Cooper'
written on her, and his open-mouthed missus has 'Lou Reed'
on her.
