for mobile

does it still play on background or with the phone locked
like spotify?

yep, that's the best thing about it, and it has more
selection than spotify too. you also get access to google
play music which does gapless playback of albums. it's
really good imo

where do you get to listen to new music, just slsk mp3s? i
don't like ian googles and ian amazons getting my pennies
either but they're hell of convenient

i've never even used spotify. streaming is sinister, please
everyone keep pirating if you respect culture

slsk doesn't work on my phone, it's only got 32gb storage
anyway and i can't afford a laptop. trust me, i'm not keen
on the arrangement

i don't like an algorithm curating my taste, i try to avoid
getting my recommendations from it

yeah sometimes you need to i know.
it's not so much the algorithm i hate and more not owning
anything and being at the mercy of the criminals who decide
what should and shouldn't be on their platform. the few
times i've used it i couldn't find anything.

but i'm the kind of piece of shit to idly trawl through
discogs looking for anything with a cool name or cute cover
art so :(

it has a lot of blind spots, yeah. i bought a little discman
awhile ago, just so i could also buy 93 by mowgli direct
from his site (since it's my favourite hiphops of ever and
all). i can't imagine he is super rich so i felt an uneasily
capitalist glow, like i was paying to feel good about myself
momentarily

I think if you're into obscure independent music (I don't
say that as a bad thing), you will of course hate mainstream
streaming services. it's not a good place to discover small
artists. For that I guess there is soundcloud or band camp
and other platforms Im sure.

I like YouTube musics too, mainly cos their local pricing is
decent and it is included with YouTube premium (YouTube
anyone?). Best way to go imo.

and yes these giant corporations are evil but lets face it
we all suck a bit of corporate cock here and there.

is it wrong to read a book on marxism if you got it free on
amazon prime? feels icky, even for a corporate cockslurper
like me

I still buy the music that I love, on vinyl if possible.

Can't possibly buy everything. So Im happy with streaming
services, even though they apparently aren't very good for
artists.

As a consumer 👍

yeah, exactly. i have amazon prime for the free shipping,
essentially, but for this i get their netflix competitor. i
didn't even bother for ages... then, hey, they have the wire
in better resolution than my torrented copy, why not?

as i am ending my rewatch of the series, HBO Max launches,
and everything HBO disappears off of amazon prime. now,
instead, i can pay $2.99 per episode, or $9.99 per season,
or $15/mo to sign up for HBO Max.

back when i had an xbox 360, i bought some games off the
~microsoft store~ and then, later, going broke, i realized i
had to keep paying a monthly fee in order to keep owning
games i'd already purchased. i let it expire; $100 of shit
gone. why, after that, would i ever pay $2.99 an episode for
a license to stream?

i'll buy DVDs, if they're reasonable, but the wire costs
$150 on DVD. bottom line, fuck it, this is shit, i'd rather
do with my crappy torrented copy

music, i suppose, it's not quite as bad. i got tired of
listening to portished's "dummy" off youtube, and bought the
MP3s off amazon for ten dolla. my mp3 collection is quite
large -- on my desktop, it's 150gb, and it's just a smaller
subset of what i want most often. i'm not even sure how
large it is in totality. and i don't have to deal with
youtube videos getting pulled, being throttled to 240p, or
entire labels getting pulled because some cunt suit is
launching another streaming pile of crap

i ought to get on slsk again. thanks for the reminder

streaming is also bad for the planet. you let me download it
once; watch locally -- that's efficient. you force me to
download the whole thing every time i watch it, and pushing
those bits around the world starts to add up into quite the
carbon footprint. playing locally is just your phone and
you; streaming involves dozens of computers around the
world, sucking down juice

i love having an algorithm suggest me new artists, but
there's not need to pay for that, i just get my
recommendations from youtube and bandcamp, and buy from
bandcamp. artists that only offer spotify or apple store
don't get my money, sadly because i so much want this

forgot to mention we also have a family plan, so for R110 my
wife and I get ad free YouTube and access to music
streaming. Win win. I want to be more idealistic but my
wallet dictates otherwise.
