i keep hearing cream's "i feel free" mixed in with the
groove strangers in my hed but so far all my attempts to
combine the two songs have led to disaster

their second lp is better if you ask me

i listened to it a bit but it didn't sound quite as deep as
the first
need to give it more proper listening time before i really
have an opinion tho

the second lp. yes, definitely, the production doesn't send
tendrils of caressing bass through the floor anywhere near
as much as the first does. songwriting is still good, but, i
dunno, a bit more NiN? the atonal guitaring i guess

more like collide, actually, with more minimal production

maybe i should revisit dummy, i don't remember the bass
being anything out of the ordinary but maybe it's an album
for systems not headphones. requires investigation

howzabout their third? i like it v much, more than dummy
(pending further investigation)

bjorkocollider

their third, it is both their title and their third

the third is more like... i dunno, add n to (x) and
psychedelic rock. like it more than second but less than
first

first album was reportedly a multitrack tape job, or
something. people gripe about rick rubin and californication
in 1999, but dummy is loud as fuck in 1994... but also in a
very pleasant way; the bandwidth seems largely reserved for
the bass, with the high-end punching through precisely as
necessary. it's louder than most albums, if you compare it,
but it's also not harsh like some really loud albums (clark,
i am looking in your direction)

second album, i dunno, just seems rushed. the deep
production is gone; there are only a handful of tracks i
like.

third they were all just swapping logic files and chatting
about it; i was reading some interviews. still doesn't bass
like dummy

Maxinquaye is great, I like Pre Millenium Tension and Nearly
God as well.

mezzanine is mostly boring and overall very fatiguing to
listen to

i like protection (the song)

blue lines is still their best nearly 30 years on but no
protection (mad professor's dub rework) is also pretty cool.
protection (the song itself) makes me all tearful if i'm
feeling a bit fragile

protection is, forever, kate libby on a roof by a pool while
dade murphy is "just looking" at her laptop

anyways, the motion of the beat in karmacoma gives me a
synaesthetic sense of a tiger walking. just the pattern of
the way all the limbs and shoulder blades move, it's obvious
if you listen but kind of hard to verbalize

i do this thing where i discover an artist/album and i'm
utterly obsessed with them/it for about two weeks; then i
move on to obsessing over something else.

from this pattern of behavior, there's a giant pool of stuff
i've previously obsessed over, filed away with details. the
voice at the back of my brain pulls from this constantly,
just sort of DJing for myself, trying to synchronize myself
with teh riddims 'n' vibes

doing my stretches this morning, one of the songs off
portished's dummy floated up out of the back of my brain. i
thot: hey, portished. actually haven't listened to them in
months. i made a note to put it on later...

...but, no, not yet.

finally, tonight, just getting home from dinner with lewis,
and, yes, now's the time, right now, put it on. it fit the
mood perfectly.

glory box is just winding down, and that was perfect for a
friday night. there's a train trax nearby and they usually
just hurtle by but then there's a train stopping, for some
reason, and the brakes are emitting a cacophonous chorus of
squealing, and i cannot describe how perfectly it synced up
with the song. there are loads of train wheels all doing
different tones, and it's like someone adding a keyboard
line on top

so, yes, that was a nice pick.

Some of the mixes from the 12"s off of Dummy are good too.
