The term is bullshit and misleading. Some journalists need to put things into boxes. Autechre were definitely frowned as part of the IDM kings back in the nineties. Even though they hate the term.

I got a chuckle googling Wisp to see if he was still making music and being greeted by this as first result:

Anyway I always wondered what his supposed connection to RDJ was meant to be. Vaguely remember people's appeal to authority that "Aphex likes him" or they were rumored to be friends or something, and thinking about it now I can't help but wonder if that was some kind of clever astroturfing by old BarnacleBoy himself. Because listening to that album I could never understand what RDJ would have supposedly enjoyed about early 2000s inoffensive softsynthesis. Maybe Rich enjoyed his company.
