When i was 14 my parents got divorced, i stayed with my dad
instead of my mother. He got some lodgers in the house to
help pay the bills from france and germany. There was this
guy called steffan who lived with us, one time he asked me
what german I knew so i said kraftwerk but i said it like
kraftverk with a v pronounciation. He couldn’t stop
laughing for hours and kept doing impressions of me lol.

oh, nah, i took four semesters of german and i was fine with
most of it, but for some reason -- raddy-oh -- it's like
nails on a chalkboard to me

fahn fahn fahn on zee autobahn

my kraftwerk story: my father spent a couple years working
in germany in the early 80s. when i was, like, eight or ten,
he was talking about it, and he said: "someone played me
this band called 'powerhouse,' and it was awful"

it was, like, fifteen years until i realized that powerhouse
is the english translation of kraftwerk and that someone
played my dad kraftwerk before they blew up and he thought
they were utter shit

(lol)

i think pocket calculator has aged very well
i had a moment back in 2014 or 2015 when someone's streaming
put it on. i remember i actually either wrote it up on hear,
or in an email to umbro, or both. i thot: this song is
totally relevant today, in a way it never even intended. i
am the operator with my pocket calculator ~ i am the
social operator with my pocket calculator, my
smartphone, schmoozing on instagram, leveraging connections.
and then i'm seeing a music video in my head and hear it as
a cover with a guy screaming the lyrics with an american
accent instead of calmly stating it in german. would still
make a good cover if i knew anyone who could sing like i
hear it in my hed
