most of the way home, on the train, i have to pee. after waiting for the previous occupant, i pee. exiting, sling the door closed, a bit, but not completely. i start walking back down the train, and this black lady conductor is standing there, smugly smiling. "was the door closed when you got there?" she asks. "yes," i reply, "and someone was in it." she stares at me, smugly smiling. i stare back. really? are you doing what i think you're doing? "is that what you do? not leave things the way they were?" yes, you are doing it. you're talking to me like i'm a retarded child. "yes," i reply, and scoot past her. she wanted me to apologize, walk all the way back, and close the bathroom door. if she had said, "excuse me, next time could you please close the bathroom door?" i would have apologized. if she had said, "could you do me a huge favor and go back and close the door completely, rather than 3/4?" i would have probably just said "sure" but, like, instead, this train is her freaking living room and she's dressing me down for something i generally get right but didn't completely nail this time. not sure if i should feel bad or not she's a regular for that train timeslice and i'm sure i'll see her again. we'll see if she targets me after this. i'll keep you posted, xlt |

i can't think of a more undignified place to kick off than one of those train car washrooms. it's one of those sights that make me respect what women have to go through; if i had to sit down to pee i'd never use 'em |

i didn't even notice people get into a discussion about hammers in the comments section of the grunting article there are a couple sound-art installations at kendall square, including a lever you repeatedly crank to raise, yes, a hammer, until it eventually triggers and plows into some resonant metal |

same deal, except you rapidly pump a lever to, over the course of 30 seconds, gradually excite the hammer chimes. i cannot tell you how brilliant this was when i was six |
