i grew up in a rather snooty town, and the police blotter
from the town newspaper was reliably a riot. some kid who
was a huge dick in middle school getting busted for grand
theft auto because he didn't feel like walking down the
street
and so just drove someone else's car home
instead

but, more relevantly, there was a reported incident in which
some hair lady was witnessed shoving her house trash into
trashcans at the town park. someone reported it, the police
showed up to investigate, went through the trash bins, found
her address on some paper, and showed up at her house. she
explained that the dump was closed, so she just went there,
and that she was very sorry and would never do it again.

one of my cow orkers recently moved to the town and i have
introduced him to the police blotter

filled with trash

this is new brit vocab for me... fly tip? like, as in flying
tip, and tip as in trash? as in trash flying out the back of
the van? tip goes in a skip, and it's in the dustbin before
that ?

i actually have trouble even thinking of the last time i saw
that. however, the clods that clean lawns, it seems they
delight in vacuuming up all the leaves and then driving off
with them spewing out the top. more work for them later i
suppose. the only thing they love than getting the leaves
they've just cleaned up everywhere is parking in a way that
blocks the street, or, even better, dangerously on a blind
corner

that's actually not a huge problem where i am. people will
leave stuff on the side of the road with a "free" sign,
maybe post it on craigslist, then if it doesn't go, pay
someone to cart it off. maybe it's an issue in other areas
of the US; i don't know.

is getting rid of that stuff an issue over there? because
americans generate a lot of trash and perhaps we just have a
better knackered-sofa infrastructure

a decade ago i moved into a place and the previous tenants
offered to sell me various bits and bobs. i mistakenly
bought their aircon for $20; it smelled like diabetic urine
when i turned it on. never turned it on again, and brought
it to the snooty town dump -- though i was living a town
over, i still had a sticker. i try to find where to drop it
off, and some humorless fatty informs me it costs $20 to get
rid of an aircon. the fact that this was what i paid to
acquire it pissed me off immensely. i drove around the
corner of a building and hastily unloaded it. this is,
probably, my only noteworthy story of illegal dumping, and
ironically, it was a dump. i was never caught.

yeah I don't know why its a problem here, we have loads of
tradesmen who are probably doing up a house and are too lazy
to take stuff to the dump

fly-tipping
oddly comfortable as the opposite -- the inverse vector --
of fly-fishing, both in direction and scale

I reckon the reason why fly tipping is less prevalent in
America is because the law is generally harsher on stuff
like this, well I get that impression.

from the article it sounds like it's just local thugs with
little oversight taking advantage of england's poor dump
infrastructure

yes, exactly, especially in nicer areas. my story about the
police going through the trash to find out who was
responsible

so, yes, it's enforcement, but i also suspect it's
logistics. england is much smaller, it's an island. the US
has plenty of places to pool and manage trash before
shipping it over to south america.
