magnet to erase tapes

ever tried it?
apparently thats what bulk erasers do.
even small but powerful neodym magnets seem to do the
trick.

reason why im asking is i recorded fah´s new album
onto a 30 yo cassette tape.
it contained a previous recording of a herbie hancock cd.
now as you´ve guessed it, it didnt record over properly.
matter auf fact i can hear both at very much the same volume

and detail which never happened to me before
and i did a lot of re-recording as a kid.
you know, recorded off the running tv, music videos,
tv themes, cd´s etc...
searching the flat now for a decent magnet
to clean up the mess i made, wondering if its worth the
hassle to dismantle old speakers or harddrives

I've just been copying off a bunch of ancient hard drives
Once I'm done, not only do they have fantastic magnets,
but you can turn the heads/platterz into a trippy reverb as
well

do you have a good link how to do that reverb?

tried cricling kitchen magnets over the cassette,
seemed to have left no effect at all :/

Bulk erasers use an electro magnate
Get some d cell batteries and wrap a thick wire around a
nail like grade school science class actually might be your
best bet

Guess it was floppy but figure it's go for hard disk too

wow circuit girl has a tempest in the room...
just did a mousehack spinner btw and it works great!

as for the electro magnet diy, i dont have that much copper
lying around. if there is no physical reason as to why it
has to be an electro magnet ill give the hard drive a go.
still have a broken one here somewhere.

I barely made it through the magnetic fields part of physics
because my calculus was never very good. But I do know it's
not just a magnetic field you need, but a moving field.
Probably a combing motion, drag the magnet over it in the
same direction to drag any coherency from the arrangement of
the ferrous bits. As for an electro magnate, it simply
produces a much stronger field than a basic magnet, I
gather. There are other things that will demagitize, like
heat, but I'm not sure tapes would do well in a toaster oven

please let us know if you get cool sounds out of failed
attempts to erase a tape with two recordings. send WAVs

this guy used a tiny but strong magnet and just
briefly swiped over a vhs tape to clean it entirely. wonder
why that worked so well. maybe these neodym types differ
from your casual magnet aswell.
had a couple of smaller neodyme, but they´re so small i
cant find em anymore :(

the internet Google hacked my private data's and delivered
this admittedly relevant article LAZY_TITLE

hehe, will do, while playing the tape back and forth i
actually heard some strange moans already. realized it was
come to daddy to fill the gap at the end.

Took apart hard drives as a lady and added them to the
fridge magnet collection. They were so strong you couldn't
pull them off, you had to slide them up the side and over
the top and then yank the corner. Yes, not all magnets are
equal. the neodyms are probably even more serious, stories
of people accidentally crushing fingers. I suppose this is
also an electro magnate advantage; it's only strong when you
power it up

i have one of those,
comes in handy more often than you´d think.
for example at a workplace i was regularly they only had a
radio, cassette, cd combined stereo. hooked up the mp3 and
was ready to go :)

in our car we use a car fm transmitter to play usb mp3s over
the radio. tried to park the car near enough to the
workplace once to fool folks with what the "radio station"
had in store, but sadly couldnt get within reach.

put some effort in you´d be able to pull off a war of the
worlds kind of prank too :)

I always meant to try overdriving a 1/8" to Cass adapter to
see how it sounds. I still have a few in a bin, along with a
few walkmen

now, if hdd magnets are that strong they ought to be worth a
try. ill search the basement tomorrow. shouldnt be hard to
find.

lol, well, never too late to take a walk on the wild side :)

taking apart hard drives -- hope you have a good set of
multitool bits, otherwise you're stuck -- but, beyond that,
it's sheer joy. They are beautiful, optimized, you get
high-end stepper motors suitable for Arduino projects,
beastly magnets, and the platters ring like bells if you
hang them off some string

"high-end stepper" would be a great name for a Dancehall
act.

and stuck i am...
just two more to unscrew and
i do have asterisks in my set, but there are
even weirder and smaller asterisks required.

"but there are even weirder and smaller asterisks required"
would be a good Indie-prog album name.
