I thought it was good, easily the best of the new three (an
admittedly low bar). I think if you forget the stupid idea
that this is meant to be the culmination of EVERYTHING that
went before, and rather watch it as the end of the new
trilogy, and you overlook the fact that the "plot" is just a
series of happy accidents, exposition and "who cares?"
reveals, it is a fun movie in the (Benneton Advert version
of) Star Wars universe. It looks good, especially the
Imperial/First order interiors and the Sith place. Driver's
good, I didn't *hate* Rey, and it's a fun. But that's enough
for now, no more.... Star Wars....

> and you overlook the fact that the "plot" is just a

Uhh you mean like A New Hope? Leia's ship just happens to
get overtaken over Tatooine, where the son of Anakin
Skywalker just happens to live near Ben Kenobi and just
happens to buy the droids who escaped in a pod and just
happened to have been brought to him by Jawas? And the first
R2 unit Luke bought just happens to blow up so he gets R2D2
carrying the message instead? 🤣

(I haven't seen Rise of Skywalker yet, maybe all of this is
retroactively explained by forcey nonsense)

Yes. If the original series came out now the internet would
have destroyed them.

Finn makes some comment along the lines of "The Force led me
to Rey and Poe" and that seems to suffice. So yes, Forcey
nonsense.

was the bit that woke me up from the hour of seizure

Spoilers.

Pretty solid plan but then he went and made a galaxy wide
announcement that’s that what he was doing before his
ships launched, giving the enemy time to come n get im. Poor
move imo.

“Kill Rey”
“Have you killed Rey yet?”
“Ah Rey you’re here and alive just like I wanted! Now
kill me so I can inhabit your body and become
unstoppable”
“what do you mean you won’t kill me?”
“Ah now you’re here too kylo ren, I’ll suck out your
life forces and become all powerful for some reason I just
thought of”
“Ahahaha one lightsaber against my lightning? You’ll
never win! Pathetic!”
“Oh no two lightsabers held in a cross, my one weakness
aaaaaahhhhhh”

What a movie, I’m still laughing.

I wonder if Kerri Russell’s character was only in the

In the sympathetic reviews of the film they said how well
the Leia bits were done, considering she was dead.

Fuck off, she just stood there silently or said something
that could have been randomly generated by one of those
Magic 8 Balls.

You could tell the script in those bits was written around
the dialogue they had for, it was so weird

I tend to go watch the Star Wars movies with my child’s
eyes intact, so I’m probably missing stuff to criticise,
but I had a fun time. Didn’t mind the plot, no one got on
my nerves. It’s a space opera, one shouldn’t put too
much thought I to it.

If you wanna enjoy just about any movie, even if it's lame
as hell, first watch Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka as a
simpering Peter Lorre / Michael Jackson hybrid.

At that point even the prequels will seem like a unicorn
chaser.

Aside from Depp's repellent performance it was a by the
numbers Tim Burton thing. Twisty houses, twisty tree
branches, oppressively stagey and sterile world building.

Weird aesthetic choices too like how everyone's skin
textures except for the elderlies are CGI'd smooth and
poreless.

The 1971 Gene Wilder version is so *alive* in comparison.

Gosh yes that Burton version fails miserably. The o my part
he nailed was he very start in that rickety house. Depp is I
feed frightening in his portrayal of Wonka. I guess Depp
would argue that the character was damaged by his father...

LAZY_TITLE

The final three movies in the series have, on balance,
been much better than the prequels. Yet in the doggedness of
their attempt to recapture and, at the same time, update the
magic of the saga, their effect has been to fatally splinter
the “Star Wars” audience. And when the “Star Wars”
audience can no longer agree on the fundamental question of
what a “Star Wars” movie is, or should be, the
fundamentalism of the ultimate franchise leaks away. The
real star wars are now the ones that take place among fans:
The series is too obsessed with recreating the original two
films! It’s too obsessed with diversity! It’s now just
diverse enough, and anyone who rejects that rejects the
spirit of “Star Wars”! “The Last Jedi” was a busy
botch! “The Last Jedi” was the best film in the series
since “The Empire Strikes Back”! “The Rise of
Skywalker” hits the bull’s-eye for fans! “The Rise of
Skywalker” is sheer fan service, and therefore sucks!

Let the Tylenol be with you.

Why did they make him the traitor? Does JJ hate his
character now?

I really thought they were gonna bring Phasma back all
robotic and stuff to give Finn something to do (maybe use
the force sensitivity they didn’t pay off?) but I don’t
think JJ likes her any more either.
