i was introduced to the universal S in elementary school in, like, 1994. the guy who i would vaguely credit as being the meme epicentre always drew it was "SMILE." years later, i found out about leary's "SMI^2LE" thing, smile, but with i squared for intelligence increase or something. i thought, "oh, wonder if that's where that came from."
the viral nature of it is actually more interesting to me than its origin -- or, could even be the origin. it's easy to draw a lot of things that look like it. the modern style, it's very satisfying when you're in fifth grade or whatever. perhaps multiple people "invented" it independently, simply because it was a natural evolution of neurology and language.

that was some interesting shit... i think it was around the same time as you when i first learned how to draw it so i'll have been about 7 or 8. had no idea it was so, uh, universal. it was from a sometime football-playing buddy and classmate called kyle and i think i remember him saying his brother was the one to show him. define memetic spreading. it was a minor badge of cool knowing how to draw it, so quickly spread to pencilcases, bags, folders etc. very satisfying symbol

Nude lady that you could change in to a dog when the teacher came. Good times!
Crazy how far back the history of the S goes though, I wonder if kids still do it now

Unfortunately my Google search of "headless nude woman turned in to a dog" turned up some macabre stuff so I'll draw it for you when I get a chance.

it's still a nude woman... just with more hair, amputated hand stumps, and a floppy labia
