i'm currently driving a shitbucket procured off of half the
value of a check for a car i actually loved, wrecked by some
daft hair-lady on her cell-phone. my favorite thing about
the car is that it has an expiration date -- reviews of the
internet indicate it has another 30k miles before the engine
seizes up and costs more to repair than is worth it. in
certain sense, it is liberating -- oh, i left the windows
open in the rain? fuck it, it's already crap -- but i am
thinking ahead to a proper car.

i used to lust after a tesla, but, really, i'm sour on that
now -- sure, a not-cheap, but not-exorbitant retail base of
~$30k -- but everything fun is meted out for a price.
ludicrous mode? two grand. self-driving? more than that.

then you get into the fact that any given tesla on the road
is subject to "over-the-air" updates -- like, you're driving
down the highway, and your tesla can suck down a software
update at 85mph. i trust tesla more than i do google, when
it comes to privacy, but the very idea that someone could
hack into tesla and hijack autodrive is somewhat terrifying
to me.

meanwhile, i do appreciate the internal combustion engine. i
would posit that scores of music has been written with the
feel of downshift in mind; that we lose something with
electric.

with that in mind, i am tempted to test-drive an
86, though i do feel like i'll be all, "this is
amazing, but i'll just get speeding tickets and i'd rather
the flexibility of four seats"

plz suggest fun cars that are $30k or less.

there's always this, if i felt like "killing
myself straight away" in the words of a certain ginger, when
asked if he had considered getting a helicopter. "i'm an
idiot in anything that goes fast. i've written off loads of
cars."
