okay i'm out of ideas
for the past month i've been getting a millisecond lag on
the program reason, and on protools with my external midi
devices (i.e. keyboard, groovebox, etc...)
it's just noticeable enough to completely fuck me over
whenever i'm trying to record something i'm keying in...
does anyone have any possible solutions, advice etc...?
i've tried 3 sound cards, 3 midi devices, 2 chords, and
nothing works the lag is still there- what's more i found
that on reason the lag exists even if i use my mouse to
select a note on the keyboard,
again- any assistance/help/whatever would be nice

-chucn

The only thing i know is that in Cubase the system preroll
setting in syncronisation menu should match the audio
latency millisecond amount in audio system menu or else you
will have timing problems.

Maybe theres a similar adjustment you most do in protools?

hhmmmm..... now i dont know much about midi, but:

does ur computer suck?

make sure u have as much ram free as possible (quite
programs, etc)

also, try downloading the newest drivers for ur soundcard,
equipment

also: try all the different drivers you have... it might
give u a choice of more than one for each device, and it can
make a big difference

sorry if these are suggestions are stupid or really
obvious.. i dont really know what im talking about

okay - in that order i've tried all of those things-
including reinstalling programs (i use winme, by the way)
and nothing else is working... i've tried 3 different
soundcards all with the latest drivers i could find on
hitsquad.com

simple answer - midi is shite
having attempted to progam a sequencer for my computers
degree some 9 years ago, i can safely say that if/whew i
catch up with the person who invented this downright evil
protocol, he will only have seconds to live
avoid at all costs

hm... yeah but the problem i'm having really isn't in
protools, i record by ear, not by midi- so that doesn't
matter- it's the keyboard thing that's driving me fuckin'
insane (sido)

could protools be fuckin' up the midi on the rest of my cpu?

Try minimizing the distance between the folders your program
files are in. Get them as close to c: as possible.

programs eh? okay should i also have the reference files
.wavs and .rex2s close to c: too?

what do you mean by a millisecond lag? in reason one
millisecond of lag is quite good.

if you are noticing a lag it is more than 30 milliseconds so
you could try altering the buffer size etc and getting the
newest drivers you can (remember to archive the old ones
tho) and think of any programmes you may have installed
recently that may cause the prob (even non audio ones). with
regard to keying in (you mean from an external keyboard
right?) record straight into midi (dont play a soft synth
"live" but use the shitty sounds on your card and drop the
data into a soft synth track). also render stuff to audio
rather than on the fly to save resources. if all else fails
try recording at half tempo and speed it up so that you
playing will only be half as innacurate (a half second
recording lag will be a quarter second playback lag)

there is lots more try if that is no good

okay, tax it sorta improved it- but only marginally any
other ideas?

okay i usually do recordings at half tempo and it's still
too much lag to be left unnonticed, any other ideas would
help, i'll try them all, only now i'm off to watch a monty
python movies
thanks in advance for any suggestions, and cheers

also try checking if you are using wordclock or the other
sync thingy: i never dealt with them myself but i know there
is more than one and the are both cocktorture to deal with:
maybe installing one program has changed the sync format or
sumpin like dat

get the lastest synth updates as well or try getting hold of
sounddiver to check everything is cool with the rest of your
setup: if you have installed any direct x or games stuff
check for any dll files that may have been written over.
have you tried playing the keyboard straight into a
groovebox midi in (take the computer out of the equation to
see if your hardware is not also buggy. reinstalls might do
it but load up the offending programms and do a reboot
(three key one not the start menu one and go into safe mode.
if you have a bad driver/glitch it will detect and repair it
in most cases. if you try a defrag it may take about a week
for the computer to get back up to full quality

dammit
that all sounds like it'll work (except quoths suggestion,
which fixed my video card but then my computer caught fire)
so i'll get to it now... sound diver eh? would i find that
on slsk or brshr?

turns out it was an output latency problem (if only i'd
checked the preferences menu earlier) but thanks for all
your help, except quoth, because if i were dumber than i am
(not too hard to imagine) i might've actually taken his
advice...
my stepbrother says that boy scouts are supposed to be nicer
to there fellow man...
for shame
anyways thanks everyone
-sincerely,

u mentioned u were using Windows ME
hm.....
i heard it was sort of shitty and finiky, and there are some
issues w/ it

why not try it with a more standard OS like WIN98?
win98 is pretty much the standard that all the drivers were
proably designed to run on... so maybe it would help if
tried switching to it?
...uve got nothin to lose

again, i should warn u that i have almost no idea what im
talking about

if so, disregard that last post, sorry:)

i should have read ur post more carefully

if you're using samples: trim the samples exactly at the
start... use a wave editor, like wavelab, deactivate your
USB interface...
