do you ever defocus your eyeballs?

i have this thing where i kind of let one eye go lazy and
i'm watching my field of view in a defocused manner. i've
heard the phrase, "soft eyes." you have hard eyes, you just
see one thing at a time. you have soft eyes, you see all the
motion at once. it's the sort of thing i'll do if i thought
i saw an animal moving in a bit of grass, but i'm not sure.
defocusing like this makes any bit of motion jump out, then
when i find whatever it was, hard focus

but maybe this is just me and it makes no sense to anyone.
