I was in a thrift store today and this so-called "song" came on over the PA system. Now I'm not the type of person to get easily triggered by music, but "Butterfly" is just too much for me to tolerate, so I demanded to speak to the manager and informed her about the history of Crazy Town and how they were exploiting Black bodies by appropriating rap music, a genre created by musicians of color. She told me the store didn't have any control over what gets played by the music service, then claimed that by the time they turned off the music the song would already be over. Now I know that's fucking bullshit because I've seen employees at this store speak over the PA system from the cash registers, and I know the music stops playing when they do that. I said she wouldn't even have to talk, just let me speak over the PA for the rest of the song (there was about 1:30 remaining at this point) and I could tell the other customers what I already told her, about the history of Crazy Town and the appropriation of rap music, and I even offered to apologize on the store's behalf. She kept stalling and saying it was against "policy", but racism is against policy too, or at least it should be. After the song ended I kept trying to convince her that she owed the customers an apology and an explanation, but she wouldn't budge. Needless to say I won't be going back to that store anytime soon. And the worst part? The manager was a woman of color! Like I say, false consciousness is a hell of a drug |
