Well, i don't want to offend anyone but electronic music is becoming easier to make by the day. Its accessibility is becoming higher too thanks to programs like KaZaa and Morpheus etc.
Still, trance seems to be the most popular electronica out there next to drum n' bass. "IDM," braindance and leftfield are still underrated.
Nowadays, though, who can blame critics for not appreciating our kind? (Drukqs got a 1-STAR rating in fucking Rolling Stone) Anyone with a computer and an internet connection can easily make electronic music and have it accissible to the public in no time.
But will these critics ever appreciate the skill, technique and mathematics involved in the process of creating such music? PEOPLE fail to realize that all music really is - is math with sounds.
And forget the "no lyrics" argument -- although the voice was probably the first instrument used by man, a voice is just that - another instrument.
What do you all think?

I have seen a lot of critics who really like aphex, autechre, and all that stuff. I think it's all a matter of personal preference.

i think drukqs should get about one star....
rolling stone did praise SAW2, saying that it's one of the best ambient cd's ever...
but i do have to agree that the electronic competition is getting thick, but if you handicap the rich bastards that could normally afford all this software, then it becomes a battle of the innovations, and that's where it should be...
if i have better idaes than a guy who has just spent $4000 on gear and software, and he gets the record deal because of having more "professional" sounds due to hi-tek gear presets, i'd be greatly pissed. and I'm sure this scenario has happened plenty of times in the past...

i think the recent critics' slagging of the more recent 'idm' releases may be due to the fact that its not the 'next big thing' anymore...ae and aphex have been releasing stuff for 10 years now...and journalists still cant pin down what their doing...so i think critics may be getting tired of them

...critics love consistancy, i mean
and as for electronic music being easier to make... i remember reading an interview with ae a while ago where they said that they loved what was happening...it was what they always wanted back when they were starting out..they seemed pretty excited about what could come of it

if one is tooo innovative, then it's experimental...and much of experimental doesn't fly well with major labels...but ijust created a topic about the tweaker project where i give props to a guy that released experimental on interscope...

I'm just disappointed that IDM doesn't come much to the States -- at least not here in Texas. i've tried SO hard to get gigs here but no one is listening.
I'm sure you all are having this problem. And, well, did Aphex, Autechre and others have this problem as well?
wanna listen to my stuff go to http://oddioblender.cjb.net
I know, a shameless plug.
I think wayout is right about how AFX and AE aren't the next big thing anymore, or so people think.
Definitely agreeing with nanotech -- i'd be really pissed if that happened too. Money and image run the mainstream industry.
