quake, by NiN. i actually had the DOS version of
this, but with redbook audio, i more feel it towards the
windows era. i remember being on line with my dad at a
long-bankrupt chain called "Circuit City" -- my dad would
sing oo-wah, oo-wah, talkin' 'bout the girl from circuit
city -- and there was Quake shareware CDs for free in the
checkout aisle. effectively, a free nine inch nails album,
for some kid that had never heard nine inch nails ever
before. god bless iD software for that so much.

hunter hunted, sierra, win95, guy at radioshack demo'd it to
me and i was immediately sold even though he had the music
off. better than quake really. sounds like a lot of
kurzweil samples

i dunno wtf is up with youtube, but every hunter hunted vid
i can find has half the shit wrong. i owned the game, i
ripped the CD myself, and it came with titles. track #2
registered as "Oblivion" while youtube has it as "The Swampy
Pits" and other bullshit. i know it's stupid, but it bothers
me quite much

even when i had windoze i'd just run dos games and emulators
on there. actually no, much later on i'd play bullet hell
games but i forget the name of the best ones sadly. clean
asia and warning forever were good but a little easy once
you knew the mechanics, fun but you need a game that just
cripples you if yr doing it right

duke3d would technically run under windows but fucking
grudgingly and it alwlays opened its own dos shell so it
doesn't count. feel like winding games were always on the
verge of crashing at critical junctures

i got to go to normal summer camp, but the the time i
appreciated duke3d most was when i got to go to computer
summer camp, and we were maxing out the ghetto old network
play mode with as many people as it would allow, in the same
room. in the stadium level, which was not very large

that was also when i first touched win95. i loved the
desktop backgrounds, themes, and sounds. which i now know
were composed by brian eno

*winding = windows (duh)

win95 blew my mind as a kid. growing up with dos then seeing
weezer - buddy holly in a neat little box you could drag around
was some deeply cool shiznit. and i loved pimping out my
desktop with stuff i'd bring home from the library... got
stirrings in my prepubescent loins from gillian anderson
themes from tucows

the real, corny truth ~ i see hackers in the theatre when
i'm 9. first time i hear orbital, prodigy, underworld, etc
-- the visuals of that movie are incredibly stylized but
also technically quite traditional -- models and cuts, not
actual computer graphics. the win95 theme "inside your
computer" had the same sort of appeal to me at 10, a year
later. with hindsight, i'd call it a prop designer told to
go nuts; depict what goes on inside a computer

meanwhile, for sound schemes -- "robots" was better.
eventually, i discovered wav files, and from there it was a
couple years of novelty WAVs that i'll be happy to forget
