to that game beyond belief!

but the soundtrack is not terribly memorable

re: trackball: i started off with mouse, but i found a
joystick was really the best feel for flying in space

one of the most brilliant design decisions of tie fighter
was giving you an energy budget. you could send all power to
the shield, or all power to the weapons, or varying degrees
in between. naturally foments all sorts of strategies: do i
leave it balanced and nibble at the fringes? do i charge
everything up, put most of the power into weapons, attack
until my shields are limping, then retreat? depends on the
scenario, really

this is as your flying with 6dof, fulfilling mission
checklists, doing things like inspecting cargo vessels,
protecting some VIP in an escort, etc.

you could also switch the firing pattern of your guns --
alternating left/right? synchronized pair? opt to use
various different sorts of missiles...

all of this was led to a bit a learning curve, obviously --
all of these things were hotkeys on the keyboard, and the
keyboard was mapped da fuk out. i remember making heavy use
of the feature that allowed me to mark various enemy ships
with the scanner and assign them to a separate threat
group.

mouse was too janky. so i'd be flying with one hand,
managing all the systems and strategy with the other

depending on the model you were flying, shields could also
be weighted from front to back. you could also divert engine
power to other systems. etc etc

X wing Vs tie fighter was better obviously.

strongly disagree. had all three: xwing, tie fighter, and
x-wing vs. tie fighter. tie fighter was the clear winner

I get heat stroke just thinking about all the carbon
emissions of those space ships. Not a good example we want
to set for our children. Hopefully this game is rated "M" by
the ESRB

Yeah I have to agree tie fighter was the better game for
single player, the campaign was much better with lovely
animated cut scenes and great mission variety, Xwing-Vs Tie
fighter was ostensibly a multiplayer game with some single
player missions tagged on until the balance of power
expansion pack

Tie fighter even had secret mission objectives that you
could do specifically for the emperor and join his secret
society, tie fighter is a ridiculously good game, in fact I
still play it to this day, Xwing alliance seems good as
well

I think it goes like this

tie fighter, xwing, xwing alliance, xwing vs tie fighter

im not biased cos xwing vs tie fighter the first one I owned
and I loved it

That first Star Wars arcade game, not sure if you had
Vader’s Tie fighter or a normal one, but you could sit
inside the thing instead of playing standing up. When my
step dad would take me to the arcades it’s all I wanted to
play.

yes, that guy said pretty much everything i've been saying.
i'll just ad that i broke a joystick once because i was so
into it. plastic handle snapped

I have the exact same Logitech joystick he showed in that
vid, I had a different one that snapped playing it as well,
you do really get into it especially when your close to
beating a mission and half your systems are destroyed.

You have gone up a lot in my estimation Epics for having
good taste in games

good article I found Epics, yeah your right about balancing
the energy budget, added an extra strategic element to the
game,
