Epic Megagames -- from which i get my handle -- attempted to respond to sonic the hudgehog on sega. to say "hey, the PC can do this too." i daresay they succeeded.
the soundtrack is not as iconic as sonic's, but it means very much to me. if you listen to the aliasing on the choir and pad samples... well, jeez, i still try to emulate that feeling to this very day.
fun fact: the game had numerous easter eggs, including "apogee mode." this mode caused the game to drop to an extremely low framerate; switch to shitty graphics. it was a dig at their then-rival, apogee software

i had the shareware version but was never a big fan, mainly cos it ran like dogshit on my old 386 (i think, could've been 486 but i didn't need to put it in apogee mode to see it jerky as a mofo anyway). was more about the commander keen games or duke nukems when i was a nipper looking for platformers

i half-suspect some of the samples from holiday hare started off on a korg wavestation, but by the time they'd got through the screamtracker/s3m format, they'd become something else

jungrock
never grabbed me nearly as much of the others, but i can hear so much more in it, now that i'm older -- mostly, influences. 80s hip hop, boogie down bronx, new wave, that sort of fing. it's interesting. i want to track down this "joshua jensen" and bother him with questions. i remember his name thoroughly, because it sounded like "genesis" but also jensen was a brand of speaker

sped-up hip-hop funk done with limited sample memory, and a deep tangent into cutting with the alias grain, rather than against it? or i'm imagining it all? hard to tell

that last one sounds like a prodigy chord progression, then it just sort of wanders off into its own fing

yes, it's "wind it up," slowed down, with more elaboration than the prodigy bothered with

i can't get over imagining the prodigy song ripping off the elaborated piano riff that the jazz jackrabbit song ripped off. that would be dope. if wind it up (remix) did the extended piano breakdown in dreempipes

I pretty much stopped liking games that are linear and which usually punish you for dying by making you replay the same linear stuff. It's anti-autechre.

the maximalist approach, i dig it. could maybe lose some drums but you might lose the propulsive, forward motion vibe

kinda good, kinda messy, drums sound like a beat.wav rather than individual percussion units for more precision, and lots of single notes in the melody at least at the beginning. Evolution to disorder was kinda interesting, autechre kicks ass at evolving patterns, even going meta with what I've heard biologists say too "evolution, itself, evolves".

If you want try making a song at a slow speed, especially a not-overly-long pattern that loops to get a feel for what sounds good, at least at first to make something to append to or expand later. It's much easier to think at a slow tempo, then u can speed it up for idm lulz later. And at a slow tempo its easier to add detail to micro measurements that is just flying by too fast to think about clearly if you start with a fast tempo. I would have posted a pic of biff from road rash 2 saying 'here's a pro tip' but i couldn't find one.
