at some point, microsoft bought this engine, and turned it into a far inferior windows 95 game called fury^3. the dos game, though, was some of the smoothest free-fly gameplay i'd experienced to date, blowing descent II completely out of the water. the soundtrack is amazing; burned into my brain to this day

I never heard of that but played descent 1, which was impressive due to yaw/pitch/roll but hard to control at least way back when I played it. I liked starfox/rogue squadron on n64, hardly played any games on systems after that, can't afford to anyway. I managed to program yaw/pitch/roll with 3d projection math in python using only points in space and a movable camera, but it was way too slow and the yaw or whatever was mixed up and not functioning 100% properly. Doom's 2.5d was perfect for a game, allowing precision control without being too 3d unwieldy.

looks interesting i don't think i'd heard of it. descent 2 is quite good, definitely a step up from descent 1 which i thought was kind of predictable. one thing i don't really like about the descent games is how sluggish the player movement is, and the constant 'bobbing' motion is kind of annoying. there's an open source port that i tried hacking to remove bobbing and make the movement acceleration/speed more like a doom/quake game and it made it much more playable on ace difficulty, you could actually dodge enemy projectiles.
if you like this kind of free flight game you might like archimedean dynasty (schleichfahrt), it's a futuristic submarine game the predecessor to aquanox. has a pretty good soundtrack too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0orImPxnX0

oh yeah, it's also better to play descent with a trackball i found. not true of most first person shooters but with the 6dof it feels more natural.

i guess i never got far enough to notice, because the wobble drove me mad, too.
terminal velocity took the complete, absolute, opposite approach. the flying motion feels 112% smooth. dissociative

honestly, i didn't mind the lack of level design at all. i would pretty much alternate between playing the level and doing loop da loops with da afterburner. the freedom of movement meant i was rarely bored. if it were a modern game with "achievements" and shit and you were dedicated to getting them all, yes, it would be pretty boring
but, no, i'd just do aerial acrobatics to the music for a bit; then go back and beat the level
