have you played the secret of monkey island epic? it reminds
me of Stan the used ship salesman and all his optional
extras

also relevant: "let's just send out the game half-done, and
finish it with software patches later"

i loved those sort of games -- day of the tentacle, space
quest, indiana jones -- but, no i never got around to monkey
island. i've heard loads of people speak glowingly of it,
though

my sister and i were both into them, we had quite a few,
even some squabbling over whose turn it was with the CD.

i remember "zork" became a brand and put out a few decent
ones, i saw my sister playing that but never got around to
it myself because it was her disc

day of the tentacle was good, but sam & max was better. that
actually, briefly, was turned into a cartoon.

"Boeing charges extra, for example, for a backup fire
extinguisher in the cargo hold. Past incidents have shown
that a single extinguishing system may not be enough to put
out flames that spread rapidly through the plane.

“There are so many things that should not be optional,
and many airlines want the cheapest airplane you can get,”
said Mark H. Goodrich, an aviation lawyer and former
engineering test pilot. “And Boeing is able to say,
‘Hey, it was available.’”

But what Boeing doesn’t say, he added, is that it has
become “a great profit center” for the manufacturer.

it just utterly insane that they sell safety features as
optional extra, not just for ethical reasons, but when a
plan crashes due to lack of them surely it reflects really
badly on Boeing, i mean hasn't this already cost them in
cancelled sales
