Tony Danza from a Steven Pinker TED Talk
when i was about five my dad had some postdoc thing at MIT in an ugly building just behind the media lab. he mostly worked at a corporate job because he had kids now, but he liked hanging around MIT, so hung on to the position for one day a week and sometimes weekends.
i also liked hanging around MIT. at five, computers were already everything to me, and the place was full of 'em. a giant VAX mainframe my dad administered... and a mac plus or something, the first time i'd ever touched one.
i'd played video games before, but the mac plus or something had next-level shit: a game called crystal quest. it was so fast, so responsive, and the graphics were so clean. i loved the game so much. the only thing that could tear me away from it was when dad brought in a crate of stuff for me to disassemble with a screwdriver
anyways, the top score for the lab's mac plus was registered to one Steven Pinker. it was an amazing score. god-like. literally an order of magnitude above the rest. the timestamp indicated it had happened on some late saturday night. i was in awe. i wanted to know more
"who's steven pinker?" i asked my dad. i showed him the high-score list. dad got a deep case of the giggles. finally, he said: "that wasn't actually steven pinker. he wouldn't play that."
"why?" i asked.
"oh," dad said, "he's too stiff."
