Ravel - Bolero

This is a classical track that I can dig. Anyone like it?
It's basically a 15 minute long piece that doenst really
change, [with the exception of key changes and stuff]. i
guess Ravel, the composer (?) was suffereing from Alzheimers
and that's why it's so repetitive (though many people
compare it to modern songs that have recurring sections).

A local alternative radio station here played it for about 6
hours continuosly one afternoon, and people were calling in
demanding to know what the fuck was going on, that's what
got me into the song :).

is that the "13 minute crachendo (spelling?)"?
ie its just the same melodie repeated the whole time.. just
getting louder, w/ more and more instruments joining in?
just a flute (or some other quiet instrument) starting out..
by the end the whole orchestra realy loud?
if it is, i know what ur talking about
i like it too

but i get the impression that people who are seriously into
classical dont like it... its like the pop music of
classical, to them anyway

It's OK - it's pretty well known as a make-out piece. Maybe
that's what happened at your radio station.

Yeah, i know its' not well liked by true classical
connisseurs. the radio station actually played it along
with an old man talking about pot...in fact it might have
been on 4/20 last year....

I totally wouldn't know what you were talking about but I
happened to watch the classic arts showcase on tv, and saw
an absolutely stunning animation to this very tune. The
thing was so amazing to me that I wrote down all the info at
the end but never did find that animation again... the song
was maurice ravel bolero (I read the same thing about having
some weird brain malfunction to create a constantly looping
track) anyway the animation was life evolving on another
planet from the goo inside a discarded coke bottle... if you
can find it get it, you'll love it it's amazing.

In the animation, there was sort of a main character that
was possibly an epitome or metaphor for all the evolving
life that sprang from the coke syrup. It marched or oozed
along, constantly mutating as it went into new bizarre
forms, the animation was better than anything I've seen
disney do. The theme was also about evolution on earth even
though it seems to have supposedly been another planet,
since eventually dinosaurish creatures evolved and all were
constantly marching to the tune... it was pessimistic
against humanity because there was this little monkey dude
that evolved and started using fire and building cities and
generally fucking shit up for all the other evolved life.
Great animation anyway.

wtf is this "serious" classical listeners don't like ravel's
bolero?? it is one of the most popular classical pieces, and
that is including so-called "serious" classical listeners -
it is a magnificently constructed piece - there is constant
subtle movement - the unrelenting crescendo adds to the
tension and the excitement of the piece... when the
ff kicks in, a thrill plummets down one's spine --
similar to the ff kicking in in grieg's hall of the
mountain king, which has a similar structure, tho only a
quarter of the length

if you like Boléro, Holst's the Planets is one of my all
time favorite classical selections. i like all 7 of them.
seem Pluto had yet to be discovered when he wrote them, and
he did no earth.

on my Neptune, when put in my crapped out old cdrom, it
skips all over the place and sounds of some awesome digital
dreamscape. like a 15-20 min. loopy mix version. super rad!

yes, it is quite pleasant here - altho this winter was
particularly nasty - been having a week of sunshine tho,
which makes a nice change...i spotted a US platoon the other
day, looking after some Arab they were calling Mr Bin Liner
or something (i was spying from an icy hillock) - they
seemed to be rehearsing something - who knows!
