I love liberals who are unintentionally racist. I'm currently working with a white guy who, whenever he meets a black person, says "easy brother" and puts his hand to his chest and does a peace sign. If he meets a white and black person at the same time he just says "hello" to the white person. Just wanted to share that. |

Sounds like a version of that thing many do whereby they present themselves differently, often without realising, to different people - found this myself as someone who moved from London to north Scotland as a kid, the broadness of my accent changed depending where I was. |

Yeah he's one of those people who changes their accent to talk to people from other countries. We went to a pub and because the bartender looked slightly Hispanic he tried to order in Spanish. |

In my experience a lot of White Males engage in this kind of "accidental" racism with such frequency that it's impossible for rational thinker to maintain the belief that they don't actually know exactly what they're doing. The fact is that well over 90% of White Males are simply hateful, resentful, and bitter to their very cores, even after we've been actively working to expunge their bullshit from our society for decades. Whether their pathology is due to an inherent defect in White-Maleness or because of socialization in a system of White Male Supremacy is a question still up for debate, but the real threat that White Males pose to the continuance of a multicultural society today cannot be disputed. These days, whenever I catch a White Male acquaintance—not that I choose to associate with many of them, but sometimes life provides us with few other options—whenever I catch one committing the kinds of microaggressions you describe, I'll just immediately end all contact with the person. In the past I've tried to explain to them exactly why whatever fucking garbage they just spewed is unacceptable, but after so many years I've decided the only way we'll ever deal with these assholes is total dissociation. Respectability politics doesn't work. Fuck them and fuck anyone who puts up with them. |

Talib Kwely told me on twitter that the thing about racism is lack of compassion, and generally those kind of people is not an asshole only to strangers but also to people of the same race. which i found often being some kind of barrier that underneath reveals way more compassionate humans than the ones that declare they arent racists. i think its a thin line between being compassionate and having your ass open to invitation. |

i think stating that everyone is the same is disregarding their culture, they are equal regarding their rights and as a human being. but of course treating everyone the same and thinking everyone is the same are different matters. i can't see why treating everyone the same is denying racism. |

i don't think disregarding certain cultures or religion is going to help anything. i think face to face communication with every individual should be based on your personal experience with them. meaning the individual sharing experience you had with them, not the experience you had with their race, their sex up to that point. |
