Or not. This is what I wrote about it, somewhere: Considering Bert and Ernie's relationship I think it's wisest to not state what kind of relationship Bert and Ernie have exactly. Them being a couple, is one of the possibilities then. How they fill things out exactly, is up to them. So to say, because they're not real. But I'm also saying it because it's how we should be towards the relationships of others in general: without judgment; a label brings judgment with it. The broader Sesame Street team also leaves it more in the middle than the writer (current, but since long) has done, see lazy link below. Labeling Bert and Ernie as gay may be emancipating for gay couples, but, for instance, less for couples that are romantic, but less sexual. The dynamic of a control freak (sorry, Bert: someone with pretty severe OCD) and a more loose character, can happen regardless of the way Bert and Ernie live together. As for things slowly becoming acceptable, that it’s ok to be “different”, well that’s positive. I’m all for kids learning empathy and avoiding becoming total bigots I just don’t think that when I used to watch my cartoons at a young age I needed to be taught about sexual orientation.
