True story, I picked up the DVD of "Dark Crystal" the other day. I was maybe going to watch it tonight, don't think I've seen it since it was at the cinema. i think you do care and i think that's genuinely fine just because you're not a minority in any of these ways, doesn't mean they are real issues (yes, i'm talking about the dreaded 'privilege' thing). the end goal is a just and fair society for all (including nature, animals and the planet). people didn't vote for trump because they felt threatened by a gay agenda like this, but because they also felt threatened by job loss, and a general unrest with new emerging nations besides the west. that's why i subscribe to the notion that all struggles are one and every issue counts. but if you focus on for instance the sexuality of Bert and Ernie, it becomes a bit ridiculous, and that's why i tried to lift it to a higher, more relevant level |

yes, but for them to do that, they must first misrepresent the argument. the problem i (my side) faces, furthermore, is that we're forced to talk about tumblr sjw's woke comments. that we never get to the higher level we want to talk about because we're forced to debate on the merits of bert and ernie being gay and other stuff you're pointing out. this bert and ernie thing is a perfect little storm. and, to me, it's a bit sad: my first feeling was: 'ow, can't that writer shut up', this is going to make our side look bad but the sad thing is he said what he said out of a place of genuine loving (wholesome) feelings: for his own husband, and for a good human trait bert and ernie represent; looking over other people's flaws (the collegeas are friends, too.) |

I, big, totally agree with you (*you* you). There's blame to be had on both sides, broadly the conservative side making something like this into a SCANDAL, and then the more liberal side (including say, the BBC) turning it into some sort of CAUSE. It's like Lando being pansexual in the Han Solo movie. The writer was asked if Lando might swing both ways and the guy just went "Uh, well, who knows, maybe". Because you can't say "No, he's strictly a ladies man" as you'd be seen as discriminatory and a dinosuar. And so then, again, you have this OUTRAGE on one hand, and a CAUSE on the other, and it's over nothing and EVERYBODY looks silly, and nobody gains anything. I read something today, about how political debate, from the top down, is both mirrored and influenced by Social Media - it's as superficial, polarised and vicious. It's hard to see, for the time being, things getting any better until people start to put down their phones. |

i wasn't aware of the Lando thing. good example. i guess you can never win. i pretty much switched from BBC to the Guardian (i even sponsor them), because the latter does try to take the conversation it to a higher level a bigger problem, imo, than the phones is the social media algorithms. just looking at how much Jordan Peterson is pushed on my youtube homepage gives an indication |

The guardian genuinely does dangerously raise my blood pressure, which some might say were reason enough for it to exist. But there is an article there today about YouTubes algorithims pushing people to extremes. So, if you look up Vegetarianism, you get led to veganism. Fine, OK, but look up something about refugees and you'll get led further and further out. I read it this morning now can't find the link. |
