i'm someone who has a hard time filtering out detail; have to sift through it all consciously. i actually find it easier to converse with someone without seeing them (over the phone, while i'm driving, etc) because then i can focus on the conversation instead of all the other data coming at me. none of the shit like, "you fidgeted and i noticed and you noticed i noticed and i've picked up on the fact that you're bored even though you were trying to hide it and now i'm hung up on what the most polite course of action would be" a buddy of mine is totally oblivious. we're at wendy's and he's staring at something on the ceiling, intently. some chick comes by and says "excuse me" and he doesn't hear her at all. she squeezes by, scowls, and wanders off. he continues staring at the ceiling. i envy him. riding the train is sensory overload |
