I mean graphic novels too, but for those of you who are
connoisseurs I’m sure you’ll agree that they’re all
just comics, and that the term is in by no means a
pejorative one.

What are you reading, what are your faves?

I’ll get back to you!

There are great literary works in comics. More importantly
they bring joy to the young and the old. And fuck me are
they a lot of work. Some of the people in the profession are
not afraid to slave over their work, it’s scary.

favourite of all time? i'm not much of a comic head but i
always loved chris ware's jimmy corrigan; tragic and
beautifully crafted. quimby the mouse too, homage to krazy
kat (natch) but so much more. oh, and calvin and hobbes goes
without saying!

Yes I was thinking of Ware when writing about the craft put
into some of them. Haven’t got his new one, but jimmy
Corrigan is a beautiful story and work of art. I cried at
one bit.

Calvin and Hobbes! Love it to death. Haven’t read them in
the a while but they were a constant source of joy
throughout my childhood. Awesome style too. People used to
think I was called Hobbes because of the philosopher, but it
was that tiger!

That’s nice. Is it because some people like comics?

I’m starting to wonder wether you’re a bit thick, pal!

recommend not throwing yourself down the stairs.

Don’t be silly. I just notice that you become critical or
mocking whenever I state loving things that don’t comply
with what you’re idea of being an adult is. You’re like
Patrick Bateman making drum n bass.

I used to read quite a lot of comics about 86 - 92. Warrior
magazine (original home of V for Vendetta (I've still got a
few)), Hellblazer, Sandman, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Howard
Chaikin's (?) Black Kiss, Marshall Law, Stray Toasters by
Bill Sienkiewicz, Elektra by him as well... Archie comics,
Batman Year One, Killing Joke (obvs) ... Toxic,... errr,
there were others. When I was a kid I loved ROM. I never
read 2000AD as much as I should have, just the odd issue.
Now I read Master Lol's Adventure Time comics and the odd
Zelda manga.

recently read:
Nailbiter vols 1 & 2: very good for a horror comic, which I
think is a genre that is particularly difficult to pull off
effectively in this medium.
Nameless: Another horror, excellent book.
Godzilla goes to Hell: Interesting concept, well done. Nice
to read something that is light on dialogue.
Plutona: didn't enjoy this one.
Paper Girls vols 1-3: bit slow and not particularly
exciting.

Next up:
Madwoman of the sacred heart
Notes on a thesis
Pluto vols 1-8

Jimmy Corrigan is a masterpiece, not just of comics. Ware is
a total nutso, I love flicking through the ACME novelty
library, I always find at least a dozen new things.

Also I'm slowly re-reading the Sandman but the big annotated
versions this time. absolutely fascinating and informative
stuff and definitely worth it if you've read the series
before.

Been meaning to read Pluto.

I’m halfway through the Sandman, and love it. The art is
not always my cup of tea, but it’s a really great read.

Signeduptolol, you could be doing a lot better in manga then
Zelda! Though I’m quick to judge I guess, as I haven’t
read them.

Indeks, if you like horror stuff, I absolutely loved Hideshi
Hino’s stuff like the Red Snake. Truly unique, and gross,
yet with a very rounded style (as in round, like Disney).
Also the guy that did uzumaki is pretty good. Forgot his
name.

An American publisher has released loads of his works,
little books. Is reading on the iPad any good? Never tried
it.

Reading minetaro mochizuki’ Tokyo Kaido which isn’t
pretty unique, but not translated in English. He did dragon
head years ago which wasn’t bad.

Signeduptolol, I’ll get back to you, there’s so much!

offline RussellDust on 2018-03-22 17:51 [#02547413]

Which is pretty unique*

I do find it frustrating that England and the US tend to
focus on the big things, and only the French and Italian
translate the really good stuff for adults.

Reading comics is what the ipad was made for imo. Nice
bright, high resolution screen, almost the perfect aspect
ratio for a single page or 2 pages on its side.

I use an app called Manga Rock which has a paid version that
lets you download unlimited comics for offline reading. It's
not legal obviously but it has all the scanlations of stuff
you can't get in english which is great and curated
collections which occasionally have given me recommendations
for great stuff i wouldn't have read otherwise.

Oh ok, makes sense. Then may I recommend something a bit
different for you (though I can’t vouch for the
translation)?

It’s a French comic called Blast. The art puts a lot of
people off but I find it quite beautiful. I wanted to
recommend it to a friend but I realised it was only
translated in English for iPad. If I could bet that you
would like it, I would. I actually paid quite a bit for my
edition, when I had nothing in the fridge. It’s so special
to me that I can’t finish it. I have maybe 200 pages to go
and I get sad imagining it being over. I’m weird for that,
I often don’t want something to end so I’ll stop reading
and leave it for a bit, often months.

Blast by Manu Larcenet.

Could you nudge me in a certain direction?

There’s a lot of funny coming of age stuff. Love Hina
comes to mind. Sweet and funny. Then again there’s so much
stuff in sci fi and adventure for that age. Also, would he
like a series he can follow (usually for a while), or a
“one shot” as they call them in Japan?

It might be a bit too mature for him but I cannot recommend
Goodnight Punpun enough. It's available in the UK in 7(!)
volumes.

It's a coming of age story that follows a boy, initially
depicted as a bird, from childhood to his early 20s. It
covers all of the things teenage boys go through through a
surreal lens but does get pretty dark and quite depressing.

It's absolutely one of my favourite mangas that i've read
though.

I went on an American Vampire binge recently and read all of

starts getting a bit silly later on, as any horror

I think I mentioned I was reading Tokyo Kaido by him atm. I
have Chiisakobe next on the list. Neither translated in
English I think, not in print anyway. I also mentioned that
he did Dragon Head, which is great but I’m preferring his
new direction. You dozy twat.

His name rang a bell straight away but had to check. I have
a great short, I mean fascinating short by him in a
collection called Underground comics Japan, and have a
volume of short stories of his which include a very funny
and surreal gag series.

I had a period where I obsessesed over Suehiro Maruo’s
stuff; do you know Usamar Furuya? I have a comic of his
where Aphex makes an appearance. The guy is astonishing in
as such as he changes style of art and story/theme with an
ease I’ve not ever seen.
