Of course I agree, who wouldn’t. Yet I would argue that
Thomas Mann is touching on something when he talks about
illness:

Nietzsche's influence on Mann runs deep in his work,
especially in Nietzsche's views on decay and the proposed
fundamental connection between sickness and creativity. Mann
held that disease is not to be regarded as wholly negative.
In his essay on Dostoyevsky we find: "but after all and
above all it depends on who is diseased, who mad, who
epileptic or paralytic: an average dull-witted man, in whose
illness any intellectual or cultural aspect is non-existent;
or a Nietzsche or Dostoyevsky. In their case something comes
out in illness that is more important and conductive to life
and growth than any medical guaranteed health or sanity...
in other words: certain conquests made by the soul and the
mind are impossible without disease, madness, crime of the
spirit."

I actually agree quite a lot. I only said that illness is
terrible. I intentionally didn't say that it
is per se useless or serves no positive function at
all.

... I'm very glad that I didn't have to go through any super
serious illnesses and I'm not talking about those. But in
the last 15 years there were 4-5 times when I got ill for
2-3 painful weeks (stomatitis, tonsillitis, flu, ..) and it
always served a function for me. It was always the same
pattern. My usual state of mind tends to be slightly
paranoid and anxious, but very far from depressed. But
rarely it happens that I get into a depressed spiral of
thoughts. Then this happens. (1) I eat very little, I
exercise a lot and worry a lot so the activity of the
immune-system goes down; (2) then I get some painful
illness; (3) then I just feel the primitive undeniable
reality of the pain .. and THEN (4) I feel like the pain is
a wake-up-call that I shouldn't spend time worrying .. and
THEN (5) I'm back to normal. ...I don't want to
over-generalize and claim that ALL illnesses have similar
functions, but it has happened to me about 5 times, now. All
I can do is note that these not too extreme illnesses always
served as a positive "wake-up-call" to me.

Yeah that’s one of the many reasons. I’ve been ill,
I’d say quite ill (chronically) for about 15 years, and
when I’ve been at the harshest stages, I would enter a
completely different “reality”. I’d gladly say it
brought out the philosopher in me, while also making
mentally far stronger.

The downside with something chronic and cyclical is that
your morale does get affected after a while. I went really
low on that side of things, but again coming out of it has
changed me.

I also find that when I stay strong and overcome a great
difficulty i feel a great sense of accomplishment, and often
I’ll find that’s when good things come to me.

For me it always felt like a heightened sense of
reality
. It's very easy in everyday-life to ignore and
suppress certain real issues. It's very easy to just delay
dealing with them ad infinituum and thus engage in
self-deception. Then the immense, brute pain feels like a
noisy alarm-bell screaming at me: REALITY IS WHAT IT IS!
FACE IT! IT WON'T GO AWAY! THERE'S NO USE IN NOT FACING
IT!
.. and then, strangely, that does the trick. ..

Yes, and suddenly you know what are the important things to
think about. For me at least, subjectively of course.

was a fine that could have put my driver lincense in danger,
but the terms are expired, and it didn't happen. i kept
monday as date for definitive relaxation, as a new start, in
fact i will have to go to work by bus and metro and by feet,
for a total of 1 hour and a half of trip, regardless that my
license was saved.

my uncle used to say it!

'The simple explanation is that "colder than a witch's tit"
is just a vivid metaphor, like "hotter than the hinges of
hell." Since a
witch is in league with Satan, presumably she has no
maternal feelings. Thus the medium by which she would suckle
a child is,
well, cold as a witch's tit.

But there's some history behind this wisecrack. A witch's t
i t (or witch's teat, to use the older spelling) supposedly
left a marking
that witch hunters and courts would look for on the body of
an accused person. Supposedly, witches would suckle their
familiars, and sometimes the Devil himself, from this
"unholy" body part. To find these marks, as well as
insensitive spots on the
skin called devil's marks--caused by the Devil's claws or
teeth--the suspects were stripped, shaven, then closely
examined for
any blemishes, moles, or even scars that could be labeled as
diabolical. To find marks invisible to the eye, the examiner
would
poke the victim inch by inch with a blunt needle (called a
bodkin) until they found a spot that didn't feel pain or
bled. Discovery
of these marks or spots--one supposes they would be
considered cold since they were a sign of communion with
the
Devil--would be "proof" of the person's dealings with
Scratch, so they would be shown in full court before the
execution.'

Ha ha! Thanks for that!

I guess I see witches as belonging in two pretty basic
categories: empathetic and well meaning, or evil and
damaged.

I’m saying that because recently I did a job for a college
in mediumship, “psychic sciences”, and intuition. I
spent a week there and I’d say I met a lot of extremely
well intended witches, full of love, with a very positive
outlook on life. I lost a lot of cynicism after that week.
