go out for a hike. take along an eight-bar loop from
whatever you were playing in the car on the way over. march
to it,
breathe to it, until your brain turns to jelly.

let rhythms arise naturally from the terrain. let melodies
occur naturally from the sounds your feet make. clop out
tunes. start to sing what you're hearing aloud.

listen to the birds. are you singing with them, or are they
singing with you? the answer is yes.

now that you've noticed the birds, you're obviously inclined
to work with them more properly. adjust your tempo to the
bird gestalt; try and negotiate a jam.

birds work in clusters ("flocks"), and you'll begin lose one
cluster of birds as you're picking up another -- like a
cellular phone jumping towers. should a new bird song pop
into the mix -- and clash! -- note where it is in your eight
bar loop, and begin to imitate the bird, albiet with a two
or four bar delay.

as birds don't like to be interrupted -- especially with
their own song! -- the birds will naturally begin to
alternate with you every two or four bars, because otherwise
they get interrupted. if you sing precisely when they sing,
they will stop... but, a two or four bar delay encourages
them to slide into your jam.

at this point, the clusters of bird begin to feel like
little echo/delay machines. as a music maker, you know a lot
about how to riff with echo/delay machines. imitating them
sculpts your jam. your delay sculpts theirs. carry a bird
noise from one bird cell to the next; hear it catch on.

after about an hour of this, get stuck -- hardcore. find
yourself repeatedly returning to the same eight-bar melody,
no matter what you do. become literally unable to stop
singing it, even after you get back to the car. find it
funny at first, then unnerving.

congratulations! you now have your own personal bird song.
it will haunt you for the rest of the day, if not forever
