It was alright film yes, but just alright, the problem is imagination, film studios wont higher people with crusty beards and people who dont wear pin stripe suits to creative meetings or what not, its just a factory of mediocrity and rehashed ideas,

it did go new directions and i do believe camerons genuine effort.
just didnt work out for me. but after all its just a "how it could have been" to me. whe i rewatch original movies, they will always stand out and provide for the universe imagined by me or the viewer on its own account.
something i now wonder about is: what about the creators? surely they wouldnt just be extinct? they wouldnt just consist of this small colony? they coulndt go extinct over some incident like this. even if they were the only ones left and were on that planet, advanced as they were, there would be survivors. it seems impossible to me they just all gathered at the same place the same time, right?
and what did they need this weapon of mass destruction for? we didnt get a clue as to whats their purpose. war? or to unleash extiction level events upon planets with unwanted lifeforms?
those questions left me a bit angry at first, because they seemed to be huge plot holes for me and in addition to a lot of other inexplicable behaviour by the crew responsible for thousands of colonists, they didnt make the movie any more believable to me. but ultimately the creators leave room for imagination and opportunity to resolve in other movies.
usually that is what makes a good movie not answering questions but putting them into your mind to wonder about, right. however if i rewatch it i really fear being mad and wondering why the movie went this way and not the other instead.

ridley backtracking over hid decision to explore the engineers background is the biggest problem with this movie. after prometheus he had the opportunity to make one of two films, completely misread the criticisms and made alien 0 instead of prometheus 2.
i'm guessing they'll never be mentioned again.

yes I had that thought as well, they were just demoted to the background more or less, we didnt find out any of their motivations or anything that was hinted at with Prometheus, we are now at their homeworld but david conveniently killed them all so we dont have to find dozens of really tall actors with prosthetic make up

im sorry, i thought everyone posting was in the know :( as youd expect i wouldnt advise watching it as an alien franchise fan. but i guess that is not an option. ^^
this is a relatively spoiler sensible board and folks around here are being rather careful. still i kind of avoid reading anything as long as i havent seen the movies.
there have been quite some big budget sci fi flicks around in the past 3,4 or so years? most of which werent half bad! not sure im counting covenant into that, even as a standalone thing, but theres plenty of room for all points of views. there may be things in it you absolutely love, you never know. you may even open eyes for unappreciated stuff.-) and you know about the flaws already so, whats to lose..

nailed it hypie, and i wasnt even thinking about the friggin avp timelines! you know that this is the thing i liked most about the avp universe (previous encounters of all the races on earth) really liked the aliens storming the pyramid scene...
that on the other hand may not be the most believable part, but how can one not have love for ruins and murals which were part of gigers original design and they just so fit to his works.

*SPOILERS*
I am going to be talking about what happens in the film. OK!?!?!?
I thought this was leagues better than Prometheus. That said, I hated the fact that they give more time to a fucking flute lesson than the infinitely more interesting bit where he bombs the Engineers ( I know there's some web-clip, or fucking whatever, that expands this, but, ... why isn't it in the film?) No one seemed to have any curiosity about the Engineer City but plenty of time for "Oh no, my wife's down there!?!?!?" (She's his wife? And they're married too? Oh and those two are a couple? Who are they anyway, all I've heard is some sassy quips and generally being nobody)
All the stuff's that's interesting is super rapidly whipped through, and all the mundane, tedious padding gets loving attention. It's like there's a good one film's worth of story going to get stretched over 5. Yes yes David has some kind of God-complex, and he's a bit of a wrong un. Yes yes there's another fight with an alien in an airlock. Yes.

Well quite. Why even pretend he might be, might not be David? I don't know how he resisted not winking at the camera when he turns and faces it as the other two start running for the shuttle / space lifter thing.
There were a few mentions to "faith" and that the Captain was religious and had seen the Devil. I'm sure this tedious strand will form part of the next one

Shit I have to see this, but nearly everyone whose taste i share similarities with has slated it. I'll be going because "duh, it's an Alien movie, by RS himself", and because there's still a few people with good taste who like it.
I'm not going with huge expectations though, which might be a blessing in disguise.

yes as we know in the 22nd century all space Christians will be sent to Rura Penthe asteroid to mine dilithium crystals, well we hope so, I think my main issue apart from the plot being a bit tired, was the fact it just never felt really scary

Fart Kermode said in his review that Scott is always as good as the script he has to work with. Citing the Martian as an example of a good RD film.
Is it just the script that's bad, or is the directing also at cause?

I think it had a point, but I reckon age has something to do with it, seems like he is trying to make as many movies as he can in his old age, so he rushes them thats the impression I get anyway

Yes is see what you mean.
Tragic when you think about Tony Scott. Always felt he was in his brother's shadow. Ok he made some average movies, but so is hisnbrother right now. He made some great ones though, True Romance being my fave.

It's a good Alien film, it's a lot better and less "why are these incredibly unlikable people doing something quite so fucking stupid?" I just get the feeling that these things are becoming, like someone once memorably said of the Mission Impossible films, trailers for themselves. It's all cryptic hints and what you could've seen and then, like I say, all the JUICY bits are skipped over and we get some tedious character shit. Who cares about these people? Nobody.
NOBODY.

yes Prometheus had a lot of characters doing irrational things, contradicting their personality in the space of 5 minutes, I like that film flaws and all, it could have been much more, thast the main dissapointment

Well quite, that's the frustrating thing. If it was out and out shit, OK. Shit film, move on. But it was ... close to something amazing however, for some reason, couldn't hold back from adding a lot of stuff that was just, objectively, completely fucking stupid and irritating. You get the feeling there's tons of cool stuff that ends up on the cutting room floor, and we get a film that's 3/4 to do with paper-thin characters interacting on a very superficial level.

after finally watching A:C, as a fan of Alien films I must agree with this reviewer on rottentomatoes On one hand you have this epic spiritual space adventure into the unknown; focusing on life, our place in the universe, creation, Gods and monsters so to speak. Then on the other hand you have this terribly cheesy and cliched monster movie that degenerates into a tacky slasher flick with horribly obvious twists [...]. You can quite easily tell from reading the films title. The film should have simply been called 'Covenant' or 'Prometheus II: Covenant'. The addition of 'ALIEN' was clearly to draw in the fanboys of the original movies in the promise of a more familiar story.
2 films squashed in one, as someone said above, more difficult/ambitious bits fell to the cutting room floor and all the mindless/clueless/obvious/average action bits in the "plot" stayed intact. I must say I enjoyed quite a bit the first part of the film, but then...the more stupid bits came the more "smh/wtf/lol moments" I had while watching. and "the new Ripley" made it even worse. she's fake.
