The mystery of prostitution

So recently I met a young woman, who turned out to be an
escort/whore. She was giggling a lot. She couldn’t utter
three sentences without laughing nervously, so it was
obvious that there was something psychologically wrong. (It
turned out she’s in therapy for depression and is in debt
because of that reason.) She was intelligent, though, and
didn’t seem to be on drugs. … When I was in the awkward
position of having to engage in small-talk with her, I went
for the easy option and started a conversation about
feminist politics. … So when she said that it annoys her
that people confuse prostitution and human trafficking, I
agreed and said the lack of clarity annoys me too. Then she
pointed out that she could even convince her mother that
there’s a distinction. How?, I asked. … She’s an
example, she said, of a happy prostitute and therefore could
convince her mother that prostitution is a great job. …
She was such a good example, she said, that even her
mother’s friend said she’d become a prositute if she
were still young. …. I wasn’t convinced, though. She
said she’s happy being a prositute, but at the same time
she’s in therapy for depression and hugely in debt. ...
That's a living contradiction, I'd guess.

The only other woman I knew who casually prostituted herself
and claimed it was a fun experience was also getting
treatment for depression and anxiety disorder and was abused
as a child. So based on my experience all prostitutes are
psychologically damaged.

So something seems to be significantly wrong with
prostitution. But I never really get a clear answer what
exactly is wrong with it. All the reasons people bring
forward to explain why prostitution is different than other
jobs don’t work. People are also selling their bodies in
other jobs, people are also choosing other jobs due to
financial pressure, for instance, and so on. So .. maybe XLT
is the place where I finally get a good answer?

Marissa Mayer just got a 146 million dollar payout for
failing at being Yahoo's CEO. It's hard to say that the
world wouldn't be a better place if that money were
confiscated from her and used to give prostitutes a living
wage, therapy and career retraining.

Often, I found, the issue with prostitution was the clients.

It’s one of the oldest forms of trade, innit

My Ukrainian partner (a Woman) says it can give people a
chance to earn better money that couldn’t otherwise, and
those unsure of their sexuality can make money while
exploring it ← see French film Young and Beautiful (my
suggestion)

What about those that are being exploited, you may ask?
Well, she says, we are all exploited for something. They are
being exploited for sex. If it wasn’t prostitution, it
would be something else. Sadly that element exists. You
can’t judge someone for doing it voluntarily. Every
prostitute has a different motivation or circumstance.

Have any of you seen Sex: My British job ? That’s a
different reality to that of welt's friend by the sound of
it. An interesting watch, nonetheless.

i believe that professionals in general do have a damaged
personality. that impression may mostly come from porn
though. met a couple of workers who seemed a bit over the
top aswell, although they left an overall normal condition
and i guess theres an exception to every rule. i have to say
htough i hardly ever met a person who seemed perfectly sane
in my whole life, few exceptions made. and with a lot of
persons i looked up to in beleiveing they are fully aware of
themselves and not afraid of anything, i was proven the
opposite big time. not saying that i think that would make
an excuse for visiting a prostitute. it makes it even worse
actually, taking advantage of those weaknesses.

that being said, i remember sexual encounters where
roughness, choking was specifically asked for and a friend
of mine has a friend with benefits, who enjoys this aswell.
i know the girls have issues, because they are friends of
mine and they know of mine aswell, who am i to judge what
they shall enjoy in their private life.

If one pays themselves to masturbate and saves up, this may
help in the acquisition of synths.

Sex should be a fun activity. You enjoy the activity itself,
not the money you gain from it. You can't really compare it
with a regular job.
Sex is also closely realted to love (and friendship), and
you don't usually love someone, or pretend to love someone,
to gain money.

^ summed up well,

im certainly not morally outraged by it, what ever
consenting adults want to do is up to them, i just cant
imagine myself being personally gratified after the end of
such an encounter. Perhaps i would who knows, its never
appealed to me for the above reasons.

It's a question that will most likely elicit the same
response from many who have been, or are still, working in
prostitution. Though it's not a question you should ask
others, as it can bring up traumas, and can trigger
flashbacks.

I am feeling particularly healthy, at the moment, and have a
penchant for openness, so:

The worst clients I have experienced were the ones who raped
me.

If any of you would like "the mystery of prostitution" and
the surrounding mindcloud to be even slightly addressed, I
am here to offer personal insights (I will not talk of
experiences from other people, even under anonymity).

I don't propose to speak for all prostitutes, or
ex-prostitutes, but I can speak for myself.

Not everyone has the same story, in regards to general
experience, but I will say that if you go down the route of
"worst experience", you'll unfortunately visit that avenue.

I've had the flipside, also. I've had people worship me, and
just wanting to talk. Even had someone offer me a full-paid
job - with training - for the TfL (Transport For London).
Not as payment for services rendered, but as some sort of
way out, or alternative.

A flare-up of an illness which left me unable to work, which
led rent to be unaffordable (which eventually led to
homelessness).

And to reiterate, I only speak for myself, in these
anecdotes. This is not the same story for everyone. People
do it for different reasons, and will/may have differing
experiences.

Doing it for about two years, until one of those fated
experiences happened (again), and I was pretty devastated.
With that, and being homeless, and unable to report it for a
myriad of reasons, for my own personal mental and physical
health, I had to stop.

do you have any long term repercussions? how did you get out
of that situation?

I already had a particularly traumatic personal history, and
numerous mental health maladies, so it was almost a "stick
it on the bill". After this event had occurred, I became
street homeless (ie. without a couch to surf), and to attain
help, I had to recount the story over, and over again to
mental health professionals, advocates, and housing
officers, and being completely unable to tell the police
about it.

Traumas of this flavour are not something that ever leave
you, and they enjoy visiting you at seemingly random times,
as is the case with PTSD.

My personal experience of being a prostitute wasn't what I'd
call favourable, but I often was on a cocktail of whatever
drugs I could find, as often as I could find them. But I
would have ways of separating the night life I was leading,
from the day life.

But as I said, there were some people who worshipped me to
the level of wanting to pay just to spend time talking with
me. As a person whom (at the time) was encountering a
lifelong seduction with low self-esteem, it felt good to
have someone to wish to talk with me without fetishisation.
