SHA-1 is a "hash" algorithm.
you take some arbitrary file (mp3, jpg, text, whatever) and feed it into (SHA-1), which converts it --> into (a short string that is purportedly guaranteed to be a unique representation of the file).
the idea is that you can compare the codes it spits out (a couple hundred characters) and this is way, way quicker than comparing every byte of a file (millions or billions of characters).
in extremely rare circumstances, two completely different files will result in the same "unique" code. at this point, the mind of perfectly reliable software experiences what humans would call a paradox, and promptly shits a brick:
"According to the above-linked bug report, the WebKit repository became corrupted late Thursday night when someone wanted to test how the system would handle the PDFs. Almost immediately, the system experienced failures. The errors persisted into Friday and eventually prompted one user to ask, "Is it fixable, or are we just totally hosed? Are we going to need to delete all the SVN history since this commit from the server in order to avoid the hash collision?"
no word yet on whether or not their server bled out pi spiral goop.

When you play a c5 note, space, c5 note. The 2 c5s are... the same. The only difference is their time coordinate. It could be that the first c5 has a million c5s on it, you just can't tell because they all have the same exact data, even time. Which brings me to counting I guess. There's only 1 thing, the universe. Everything to count is really a tiny decimal, like 1 apple is 0.000000000000000001th of a universe, only more zeros. If you try to put a number other than 1 at the top, everything starts to curve back in on itself. I know this because I'm a real scientist of gay nigger theory. Sorry my brain was memetically hacked to replicated those last words.
