I once edited a bbc news age to make it look like one of the
chuckle brothers had killed the other one in a auto erotic
asphyxiation game gone wrong, printed it off and my dad
believed it.

also once we recorded the tpelevision turning over for half
an hour and played it back so my dad thought the remote was
malfunctioning and got irrationally angry that was really
funny

also the time i recorded angel of death by slayer onto the
end of his trad jazz tape that was a laugh

here is the fourth call i made to the greyhound bus
phone line. all three times before, i had to go through a
phone menu, but this fourth time, i went right to...
well.... this.

since sean booth isn't here to spoil the fun, i'm sure your
ears will agree this was recorded on a public payphone in my
school's hallway, through a $3 suction magnetic phone pickup
from radioshack, to a minidisc player made of pure magnesium
or some shit

it was either the minidisc or my buddy's microcassette
recorder, anyways

obviously, we were early adopters of VoIP due to the supreme
advantages in quality. studio-grade recordings...
studio..... hey, why don't we....

...then, yes, at some point later that evening we're using
an MC-202, a TR-606, circuit bent keyboards, and rack FX to
annoy the good citizens of nebraska or some shit.

there is not a doubt in my mind that richard d. james heard
these calls and said, "the caustic window prank calls sound
like shit compared to this! shit! now i can never release
this EP!"

the first one of that pair i was really into it. my buddy
was talking, i was working the noise machines. very
deliberately dropping parts in and out when one or the other
was talking; essentially jamming to it like a piece of
music. following the tension; trying to tweak the guy a
little further when i saw a window... odd little pre-echo of
all the nonsense in my giant ramblethread.

once we rang up some number to get a bunch of drunk high
school kids. they thought we were amazing: how are you doing
that noise? what is your name? wanna hang out? if they
weren't in florida we probably would have

picking the numbers is a whole strategy i won't bother to
detail, but i will say this: if i'm going to bother this
person, whoever they are, i want to be confident they're the
right person to bother. you can pull that out of their
immediate reactions.

we had a rule: if someone simply hangs up -- no chat, no
cussing -- three or so times in a row, we give up and move
on. if someone's boring, we move on. that way, the people
left in the mix are the people who are so annoyed you've
wasted 30 seconds of their time that they spend three
minutes yelling.... and the people too clueless to figure
out what the fuck is happening

anyways, yes, there's some sound advice for anyone: if
you're getting prank calls, the fastest way to shut 'em down
is just don't talk. hang up and don't answer again. it'll be
over almost immediately unless the caller has something in
for you personally...

it's amazing to me that so few people seem to ever figure
that out. seems obvious really
