Ah you are about Ken. I was listening to some Joy Division
before beddy-byes last night. I've got the box set but
haven't gone through it. I bought it in a sale. I have so
much stuff I haven't got around to playing.

I love the bassline on Isolation.

no worries!
coo!!l-they are my favourite band of all time. absolutely
classic. ive borrowed the box set off a friend and im going
through some of the unreleased session stuff at the
moment...unknown pleasures still has to be one of the most
phenomenal albums in history..i really cant think of another
recording that really knocked me for six. incredible.

have been lent the complete bbc sessions as well, thats
worth a listen-the version of 24 hours is stunning.

yeah its about 34.99 if my memory serves me right!! failing
that mate, if youre quick, HMV are doing the complete back
catalogue of JD albums for £4.99 in their current sale-and
there doing 'substance' for £ 5.99....but the box set does
look nice... (note-the album 'still' and most of the peel
session material is missing from the box set though...)

of their sales for £16.

£16.00 quid? that has got to be one of the best bargains
ive ever heard!! the box set is a great package-well
compiled and the booklet layout is smart-very peter saville
era graphics/ essays are a good read. you got a bargain
there jonesy...

Yeah I snapped it up quick-smart. I'd only heard Love Will
Tear... and covers of their tracks by Therapy?, Moby and
...erm Paul Young. Whoever let him do that needs shooting.

I saw this programme on cable about dance music and they had
this bit about New Order's Blue Monday. Barney was talking
about this Sunkist advert they did where they changed the
words to a song. He couldn't do it in the studio until
someone put a big sign over the mixing desk with the amount
they were getting paid written on it. He sung his heart out
then ha, ha.

YEAH IVE HEARD THAT!! IAN CURTIS USED TO BE A HUGE PRACTICAL
JOKER BELIEVE IT OR NOT-HE'D PISS IN HOOKYS ORANGE JUICS AND
HE ONCE CUT THE LEGS OFF STEVE MORRIS'S BED!

Ha, ha. I don't really know much about him. Did he suffer
from depression? He had epilepsy didn't he?

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-04-18 15:12 [#00182066]
Points: 1844 Status: Regular

well, its a bit vague whetehr he did suffer from depression
or not-i mean according to reports he didnt have a
naturally depressive nature to him-it was only wwhen he was
put on a strong dosage of medication for his seizures. if
you ever want to read a decent enough book about him, i
strong;ly recommend 'touching from a distance' by deborah
curtis-in spite of the nature of events, its a fantastic
read-a great read for insight into curtis's character-he was
a racist believe it or not, and treated his wife like
absolute shit-having affairs left right and center. he was
bonkers-he had a row with rob gretton over something ina
studio once and ran around screaming with a table clothe
wrapped around his head. 'touching from a distance' is a
great read though...

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-04-18 15:18 [#00182080]

I take it Deorah Curtis was his wife? I'll keep any eye out
for it. I usually stay away from biographys but I just read
one on the Manics that was excellent. I went off them a long
time ago, and only like the Holy Bible now but it was a
great read. Richey was an interesting character.

Didn't Joy Division take their name from the recreaction
area in one of the Nazi concentration camps?

How much of a racist are we talking about?

Hi Ken,have both the box set and the book you mention.Have
liked JD since '87(maybe earlier),and still have all the
cd's etc.Shame he wasn't around to see the
success.Apparently,he liked Kraftwerk! }:>

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-04-18 15:25 [#00182105]
Points: 1844 Status: Regular

thats right-forget what the book was called, the 'joy
divisons'were 'entertainment' wings full of protitutes in
the concentartion camps in aushwitz. despite a lot of jd's
early imagery, they were interested in nazism. he wasnt THAT
much of a racist (dunno how you grade these things) but in
terms of harm-not really, just spoke out agaisnt minority
communities, but not in public. not defending him but the
impression i get was that it wasa part of the 'hate '
element of punk in the late seventies...i dunno though to be
sure.

before going on stage saying 'listen to this!!!'

Is that they 'weren't interested in nazism'?

Were they entertainment for the nazis or the prisoners?

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-04-18 15:30 [#00182117]

jd werent interested in the nazi imagery that they have been
associated with (a little naive of them perhaps??)

i assume the entertainment would be fort the soldiers???...

i like joy division. when i first heard them though, years

"Leaders of men" has gut-wrenching lyrics

powerful stuff... IC really meant it too.
Great music

I think the Joy division were Jews who were seperated from
the rest in the camps & raped bt the SS guards because they
were 'pretty'.

Dark shit.

Typical Commie- too much money to know what to do with :)

I like "Love will tear us apart" Vdm did a remix of it on
the 20th anniversary of the lead singer hanging himself.
Which I thought was very tasteful, esp. as they butchered
the song.

I have all their "normal" cds and the 'Permanent'
collection. '24 hours' is my absolute favourite, the lyrics,
the bass..well the whole song.

My top 5 would be..
24 Hours
New Dawn Fades
Transmission
She's Lost Control
Insight

-P

PS. Unknown Pleasures has one of the coolest album covers
ever.

£3.99-bargain. the album cover from unknown plaesures comes

represents a dying star. factorama. yes steve-the best band
