i was shopping at a shaw's for cookies. shaw's is cheap (and sells cookies) so you have to check the dates on things or they'll pull a fast one on ya (sell ya stale cookies). sometimes it's all expired, or almost there, you know? so i'm going through a dozen bags of chocolate chip cookies. i've scouted where the machine spits out the relevant date and i'm in my groove, having adjusted past the first two or three to what numbers i need to expect to read upside-down. then i hear a lady yelling at her kid: No, don't touch that! Don't touch it unless you want to buy it. No one wants your grubby hands all over their food. Put it down on and on. i'd spotted the lady in an aisle earlier, barking orders at her poor child, who moved like a trained Navy SEAL doing her bidding with lightning precision. she would never manhandle the donuts; no sir. or maybe she would, as rebellion? in any case, it was one of those conversations that was just loud enough to be out of place and i felt like it could be meant for me. i took my time and then checked them all a second time just to be sure. one can never be too careful |
