The band has gone through myriad line-up changes,
with Ed Wynne (guitar, keyboards) being the only constant
presence since the beginning.

from wikipedia. an embarrassingly earnest word for an
embarrassingly earnest tentacle.

no, seriously though, ozrics is not psytrance or goa. what
the fah, lolman? it's a different thing; it is. it's
perfectly servicible microgram music from some crusty old
organics that managed to draw down the sixties gently, good
on drugs well enough, be nice to the tentacles like you
would the manneheim steamroller man or the heads that DJ the
weather channel

a guy i know once said, "IT people are the janitors of the
information age." i sort of winced, but it's one of those
harsh-but-true zingers that really cuts. and i am not even
an IT guy. i just know plenty, and they're nice. it's not
like IT is a simple job than can be performed by a monkey.
hell, most actual real janitors couldn't swing it.

it's similar with this, er, head music. let's also add
legendary pink dots, and of course, ground zero -- pink
floyd box set. no one hates pink floyd because they came up
with that shit. but you know what? i don't think i could sit
down and do a pink floyd box set anywhere near as well as
the tentacles. like IT, it's a bit mundane, but that doesn't
mean it was easy.

i don't go searching for this music for the same reason
you're tearing it up. i have plenty. i have around seventy
or eighty pink floyd box sets, depending on how you decide
where to draw the line. i'd seen "ozric tentacles" mentioned
on the internet somewhere, and the name caught my eye. it's
like spotting a really strange bug. not just an ant or a
beetle, but... i dunno, what is that? it's a hed bug. or an
earworm. i dunno.

anyways, it got buried in the mountain of things my brain
downloads from the internet, but when i saw it again here, i
clicked on it right away. now i will add some tentacles and
we move up to eighty-five box sets. more will come this way;
i'll probably notch 100 in a year. it's an organic approach
the suits the genre, and it largely handles itself.

i also feel compelled to split of
psytrance/schpringle/infected mushroom as not the same thing
as what i was just talking about, because, well, you
wouldn't confuse an organic taco joint with a city kebab
joint

then, on your city kebab joints: infected mushroom is one of
those bands that i like well enough, but keep quiet about it
because i know what i'll get. it is the sort of music i
would call functional music, because i put it on at certain
times for certain things. infected mushroom is great for
driving fast and coding. i wouldn't trifle with that if i
were tripping. if i were, braindance is more the speed...
but the tentacles or the box sets would both be equally
good. it very well be because i don't have a very refined
palette, there. not like electronic. infected mushroom is
like an escalator. interesting for about thirty seconds,
then you've about got what it's about. after that you just
use it to get to the second floor. i've never heard a
schpongle track, but i've seen the name a few times. i think
it may be time for the head music approach to acquisition to
infect other mushroom genres.

i found ozric tentacles interesting in a braindance sort of
way. it was not an escalator at all. i feel compelled to
pick a matching analogy... er... it was a glass elevator
inside a skyscraper. it's interesting for 45 minutes or an
hour if it's a nice day and you're bored. after that, well,
it's slow, and you opt for the silver metal bullet elevator
in the building's core. six months later, it's the right
sort of day, and the glass elevator is fun for another 45
minutes.

then there's the roller-coaster. favorite filler analogy of
every music reviewist ever, but sometimes apropos. totem
crackerjack by chris clark is pretty roller-coaster. there
is a duntaduntdunt like a train going over wooden slats, ok,
you're visualizing a track and you're on a minecraft cart or
something. then there are bzzzrrr noises like cartoon flying
cars whizzing by you. this is clearly and directly a
roller-coaster. but i actually get a much bigger adrenaline
rush from vsnares. totem crackerjack can't match that rush,
but it has a much more interesting plot. die hard vs. the
island

lennon's walrus is the only walrus i've heard so far, except
for perhaps watermelon man. but that's arguably more of a
platypus. my analogies are spirographing off topic, so i
think i will put on some infected mushroom and code. i will
enjoy it for moments here and there, but my brain will
largely be inside a C compiler. my lower brainstem remains
with infected mushroom, though, as i type, tab, and edit in
time to the beat.

trying to continue my success remaining sort-of on topic,
here, there are plenty of these not-pink-floyd albums that
should really not exist. or, at least, they should be kept
inside the crusty commune they came from.

then there's a tier of sewege that's even worse than that,
like "celtic moods" and shit that you buy while waiting to
buy your meat nuggets at megamart.

pretty much, i clicked on the first track in the thread and
i heard a DX7 or some FM thing doing interesting cyclical
atonal stuff and i kept listening. as i did, at no point did
someone's girlfriend (who is terrible at flute) drop into
the mix (and play flute). not dull, check. standards, check.
