used to cost £1500

top of the range sampler
128 voice polyphony
32 part multitimbral
one of the best hw samplers ever made

so
now it costs £200

it's a funny old world for synth geeks

6 FX units built in, no need for expansion cards like on
blackeye samplers

interesting area. Hope they do something with Coal Xchange
soon....

Got my Akai S5000 with USB card and four sample CDs for
£500 about year 2002/2003 from a bloke in a record shop.
I honestly thought prices would be lower for hardware
samplers. I am sure they were a few years ago.

who is buying them? People who sold them in the first place?
kids mostly just do it in their computers/phones
i can understand kids getting a rs7000 or mc808 cos they
could afford a 2nd hand MPC or something, but the prices
dont reflect that even

rs7000 got praised by aphex in the syrobonkers interview
but it's more like an a4000 with a sequencer built in

a5000 is beefier in terms of features
heavy rack machine though, not exactly convenient
the weight means desk or rack usage only

"a4000 with a sequencer built in"
its the pads AND sequencer i was thinking about, it was sold
as a 'workstation' whatever that may be.
I can make every possible configuration of N op DXs patches
on my computer right here so why would I bother.

so how does one jump the line between knowing how FM
synthesis works and actually understanding it?

geoff

it works like this: modulate two sine waves together
make a bell sound
play the bell

ding dong
