"Unfortunately, by this time the statute of limitations had run out, and he was unable to sue anyone for using the beat in their music. In this era, there were no copyright laws in place regarding sampling like today."

Seen this already. I'm torn and like and dislike this in equal measure. I really appreciate the need to somehow pay respect for a moment of music that has been such a huge resource for artists in genres so close to my heart, but I equally dislike the fact that it's probably going to be largely overlooked by the people who made money from its use in the first place, and just supported more by enthusiasts (punters) who funded the artists success in the first place.
It's a lovely gesture but sadly too late.
PS. Fuck the Statue of Imitations.

it's a nice thing to help out some broke elderly musicians, but the tone of reverence for these guys kind of pisses me off. the whole thing is accidental. they won the lottery; thousands of bands like this never had an amen break moment. must be right irritating to have your band's whole legacy reduced to twenty seconds of drum break that none of you thought much of at the time.
meanwhile, the actual drummer is dead (the drummer is always dead), the writing on this chumpstarter is inexcusably poor for something involving thousands of pounds, and there are better things to donate to. the people donating to this are the sort of folk that DJ Hardcode (RIP) would have referred to as "hipsters"
