fair enough, this place is a raging britbin, and it's hard for "the chaps" to understand the superbowl. americans watch the superbowl because it's a major sports event, others watch it for the commercials, and others (like me) simply because it's an excuse to throw/go to a party and scream at the TV while getting gradually wasted. sure, there are probably a few people who tuned in for katy perry, but not many. as for LEFT SHARK MEME: a guy in a shark costume has too many drinks before going onstage at halftime, totally bungles his dance moves, and people shit a brick laughing. next day it's water-cooler talk at the office, there are animated gifs flooding tumblr, and some grifty sorts churn out t-shirts, figurines, and even costumes. a week from now, everyone will have moved on to something else.... but it won't be forgotten; i expect to see quite a few left sharks next halloween. and that is why people would buy the suit; it has nothing to do with that tart. katy perry's role in this was being ignored while everyone looked at left shark instead of her, which delights me. max martin writes all perry's tunes, and i doubt she designed the costumes. it's like claiming you own a car just because you happen to be standing next to it! if i had to bestow the rights to left shark upon someone, it would be the guy in the costume, really. mostly, i find this interesting because corporate america is trying to claim ownership of an internet meme, and that's not really something that's happened before. can you own a meme? if so, it's a way of controlling the internet hive mind, and that has serious implications. but, whatever. this is just mental chewing gum for me as i wait for shit to rsync. if you don't give a shit, just listen to whatever obara linked. |
