mappatazee and marlowe + other old people

just forking this one off.

EpicMegatrax: "i don't know [mark bell's] music
(yet) either."

mappatazee: "wtf, man?"
marlowe: New generation, mappatazee :/

i feel like you two think i was bragging about my ignorance;
i was not. my point was that i really "felt it" without
having met mark or heard LFO; quality of character shone
through even in this piss farm -- xlt was just something he
did in his spare time for a giggle, no doubt, and even that
became something to someone. and, when you have something
real to say in memory of someone, you say it, you don't just
quote some hallmark card bullshit.

in any case, you two seriously need to climb down out of
your own asses: turning the "do you know artist X" thing
into a competition is pathetic. when you do, it's you
propping up your own ego with bullshit. i think you'd find
it a lot more pleasant if you spent time appreciating the
things you claim as yours, rather than appreciating that
someone else isn't onto it (yet). it's not even like i'm
some twerp saying "oh screw that old fart stuff," there's
just a lot of music in the world, and it takes a while to
get through it all! there is no faster way to turn yourself
into a isolated, crusty old stiff that noone listens to,
than to be condescending to the few kiddies that listen to
you in the first place.

disclaimer: they were probably just trolling; i'd have let
it slide, but this is a real problem, yo. crate-diving
elitism has to fucking stop.

LFO isn't exactly obscure...not sure why you accuse of
crate-diving elitism. Just go listen to the LFO EP and the
Frequencies album and stop making excuses. :p

let's be real, here -- how many years did each of you lose
to pink floyd? smoking some of that shitty 70s weed; the
stereo guy tells you about "quadrophonic" and puts on the
clock song, and ten years have passed you by before you miss
the starting pun

i actually do appreciate knowing where to start; noted.
mostly just, i could play it now, tired and faffing about on
the web... or in the car, where i'll miss minutes at a time
when traffic gets thick.... but given all the shit going on,
i sort of want to sit down and focus, and it's hard to
secure that sort of serious time with life being the fucking
jerk that it is. but i will get to it soon enough.

Well, you should know about music a couple generations
before your time that is related to what you like now. I
wasn't around for kraftwerk, early eno, silver apples, and
so on but I know about it because it was seminal to
everything else I came to like. If you like Aphex and
Autechre you should know about Artificial Intelligence era
early 90s stuff like LFO, Cabaret Voltaire and so on.

It's like listening to DMX Krew but never looking into 80s
electro or freestyle and just assuming he came up with all
of it on his own. DMX is better after you've heard, say
Lisa Lisa, Aphex is better once you've heard Drexciya and so
on.

I think he has tons of hobbies.

I've realised maybe a tad late that he clearly has problems
dealing with his brain and that means I've warmed to him. If
he wants my "help" it's his, as condescending as that
sounds.

seriously, posting on xlt requires that you at least looked
at the discography of warp, planet mu and rephlex. Not
knowing LFO is weird in here.

I'm sure his generation knows tons of stuff I have no clue
exist.

Let's not give someone a hard time for not knowing
something.

i disagree with u guys. cannonizing music codifys the idea
of good and bad taste which imo doesnt exist and its only
used 2 as a weapon put value judgements on ppl (such as what
was done on epic mega tracsk) or 2 boost ego (individual or
group)

I'm not spanking his behind, it's just weird for me that he
doesn't know LFO.

I'm curious for the music he knows btw, that's the reason
why I keep coming back to this place: to discover excellent
electronic music ☺

At least now EpicMegafarts knows about LFO. Start with (WAP
005) and go from there. What a wonderful journey of
discovery lies ahead! For a machine enthusiast you ought to
love it.

"What a wonderful journey of discovery lies ahead"
"Yeah he's lucky in that sense!"

...exactly why i don't just put it on while stuck in
traffic.

as for this thread, it gives me a laugh how much a bit of
the feelies makes the grouches here squirm. i'm not entirely
serious here, you know.... like, rdj was born in, what,
1967? and dark side of the moon was 1973? 'twas just a
joking way of making a serious point: i think a lot of
people have a "whoa, pink floyd" phase. for some it lasts
decades

offline chachmaster3000 on 2014-10-27 21:23 [#02478571]

i still listen to pink floyd almost on a weekly basis.
probably my all time fave band. i sorta wish i could call
another group or person my fave, because i don't feel like
that pink floyd fan, but really.. it's fucking pink floyd.
never really got in to the final cut, division bell, or
piper at the gates of dawn (except for relics content)

i never liked multiplication gong, either (though i did have
a weird dream about that album cover once!).

back when i first tried weed, someone learned that i was
both new to smoking and unfamiliar with the floyd. he
promptly said here, sit in this chair, smoke this, now i'm
going to just put this on and leave it here with you. then
he did; he literally left the room so as not to be
distracting! it was dark side of the moon, and that was a
pretty good first experience with pink floyd.

piper is probably my favorite, but that's almost a different
band; doesn't really count. other than that, i suppose i'd
go with wish you were here.... but anything they did before
the 80s tends to be good by default.

anyways, i was just trying to emphasize that we aren't born
with taste; it's something that develops over time.
pointless to give someone grief about not knowing all the
stuff you do if you've a decade or two more of listening
under your belt; that's no fair at all...

all joking aside, i could write up reviews of all the
tracks, but i'm trying for something more succinct, here. i
listened through it properly while exercising (heard
something about bell breakdancing and figured it'd work; it
did). in a nutshell, El Ef Oh! is what tri repeatae would
have sounded like if autechre were not robots incapable
erections -- and tri repeatae is my favorite autechre album.
otherwise, overall drexciya and orbital tones. some of the
tracks did little for me, but many did a lot. i was
thoroughly sold after hearing "we are back." freak EP is
good; look forward to listening through to the full album
that's off of.

I think you're confusing knowing LFO with liking LFO. If

being aware of the existence of the music. Personal taste
