Practice, dyuuude... If you're talking about graphic
design, gotta study composition and color theory.

In art school, one of the foundation graphic classes was
called "Color & Design". The first semester, we didn't even
use color, because it was about solidifying understanding of
shape and value interaction (composition), flow, energy--
buncha stuff about conveying emotion through geometric
shapes. Second semester introduced simple color theory
stuff (emotion through color, color interaction/balance,
optical mixing, etc.).

...then later on comes typography and whatever else.....

If you're talking about illustrative graphic work, then you
basically just have to draw, forever, to get solid
foundations in being able to see.

last work i did was cleaning up 65 old b&w photos of India.
for a two hundred. at the course it's all about making
illustrations of things already existing (drawings,
illustrations, cartoons) and a few 'consumer' graphic stuff
like doing a flyer for a sushi bar, doing a t-shirt ect. i
am keeping it very simple

I finally understand the meaning of this thread.

If you're passionate about your work you'll be fine.

What a very strange question you asked!

Maybe it's not for you but you can make a few bucks on the
side by doing stuff. I don't know. generally people know
when they want to actively pursue something. I dunno, man.

Let us know!

Don't be silly. ;)

There's so much visual pollution all around us, it's
disgusting, it makes me feel sick. I'd prefer the people at
it enjoy what they do.

tDR have always come across as passionate.

Passion for art comes like the passion for music-- it is
somewhere in your heart for whatever fucking reason, and you
do it not for money or recognition or anything-- the main
driving force with passion is because you love it. So I
don't know if I can help you find some sort of passion in
illustration or visual art in general.

My major was illustration in art school, so I technically
could help you along that particular path, if that's what
you're interested in. But illustration is quite deep, and
the fundamentals of drawing are hugely important to the
artform. So if you're going down that path, all I can
really recommend is to draw from life as much as possible,
because unless your brain has a massive library of the way
this world works, you cannot develop your own styles to
represent something that we can all understand. And, just
constantly check out tons of awesome illustrators. If you
don't have a passion type feeling for looking at artwork,
then it's probably pretty tough to get a passion for
actually producing it.

Photo retouching in and of itself is an artform, but those
who are best at it, actually have a solid foundation of
panting, color theory, lighting, etc., in order to make
their works look real. I used to actually think photo
retouching would be a dream job, because I have tons of fun
fixing photos and making them look good. I used to photo
retouch for no reason but to have fun, so I imagine it takes
that kind of interest in a subject to "find purpose" in it.
Like masturbation or sex at its finest-- the action is the
purpose.

i'm just retracing stuff using vectors atmo, today i was
retracing the black parts of a picture of a tiger, and i
quite liked the results. learned how to color stuff after
some kind of automatic retrace is made on the drawings, then
i got disarmed by an illustration of david bowie with all
those shades and color changes. that also got to be redone
with illustrator. it was the first week, now there is the
second. i can't draw.

i'm deeply fascinated with how to merge computer rendering
and drawing. ghost in the shell: stand alone complex is a
good example. not the stuff in it that's flagrant, obvious
early 00s and sticks out like a sore thumb, but the stuff
that's so good you miss it unless you're looking for it. in
particular, the way they've computerized the cell shading on
the tachikomas:

"Throughout the animated series, Tachikoma characters
were rendered by 3D software using a shader that mimics
hand-drawn art. This method simplified the task of animating
detailed robotic characters."
