A disturbing fact about Syro

Something is weird with Syro.

On the one hand, and as far as I know, this album includes
all the unreleased tunes Richard D. James has played live
and which fanboys considered as composed by Aphex himself
(from 2006 to 2012): The Manchester track, (track 1), the
Metz track (track 2), etc. A total of 6 tracks out of the
12 that make the album.

On the other hand, RDJ keeps saying in interviews that he
has shitloads of tunes ready to be put out on albums. How
come did he never play these lots of tunes live? Why isn't
Syro composed of only a few of the unreleased tracks played
live?

Is he a liar? Are those "shitloads" non-danceable tunes? Do
those tunes need mastering before being properly tried
live?
Do you have any other hypothesis?

Well, those tape tracks joyrex had hidden in his shorts for
so long suggests we don't need to hear everything
he's done.

The tracks on Syro were the better known and most
appreciated of his unreleased tracks, weren't they?

I'm trying to find out the principle of constitution of
Syro.

maybe he just released them to stop people listening bad
recordings of his tunes...

The disturbing fast is: all the famous unreleased AFX tracks
are on Syro. (That fact proved to be wrong, anyway: only
"most of them" are on Syro.) But we all know that AFX says
he has shitloads of tracks ready.

i think Syro is probably "a comp of old tracks which is
never really finished and always changing" that he mentioned
in fact magazine about 3 year ago, he mentioned 5 other
albums so he probably had Syro mostly finished several years
ago

When an artist releases an album after 13 years we don't
expect them to have done it all in the last fortnight.

it's not like he wasn't reasonably prolific through the
2000s, just not as aphex. Every few years he had something
out.

I'm also not convinced he didn't hire monolith to be his
cover when the tuss was too easily discovered by people.

Wasn't Melodies from Mars the one that he kept changing? I
remember reading that... somewhere. Might explain why it's
never been released.

offline Hyperflake from Wirral (United Kingdom) on 2014-09-24 21:33 [#02476727]

He has 4 albums worth of stuff from melodies from mars, so
perhaps he couldn't decide what should appear on the final
album

sorry should have been more precise, what i meant was that
he couldnt decide a final running order for a melodies from
mars album cos he had so much material, or eventually just
went a different path with the more drill and bass stuff
like yellow calx.

Odd to think that jivver is a human being, and not actually
the dog in his avatar, or some savant hermetically sealed in
the studio spending years perfecting a snarling sound for
the next record. I like to think of him, with his feet up,
reading The Sun and thinking "Hehehe, I made Frequencies,
fuck off the lot of you"

RDJ has 10 000+ hot tunes ready to release.
RDJ has played 6 unreleased hot tunes live.
RDJ has put 12 tunes on Syro.
The probability of having one of those unreleased hot tunes
played live on Syro was very tiny.
But half of Syro = those 6 tunes.

WHY? IT IS AGAINST ALL ODDS.

UNLESS you understand that albums aren't compiled by chance,
and Syro is obviously a thank you to the fans as much as
anything else...

All that bollocks about "thousands of tunes" was just RDJ
being a coy prick. Virtually anybody who makes music and
critiques themselves tightly will have dozens and dozens of
tracks that they will never release due to their own quality
control process. I'd guess that Aphex gives as much of a
shit about sharing his best stuff as any other person. I
think it's clear that he's not sitting on this archive of
his "best music" due to the fact that Syro is tepid shite
that develops nothing new on his old material.

Of course Richard never said he had ten thousand tunes, he
said about four years ago that he had six albums
ready...there is now even less reason to doubt this than
there was then, and there wasn't much then...

I tell you what, Puffy Combo: maybe he played those tunes
live because he fucking likes them. An even more outrageous
thought would be that he put them on the album because, wait
for this, he likes them.

Many bands from various genres play new songs live to test
them or (and this may come as a shock to you) because they
like them. Sometimes they aren't released for years. It's
common practice.

He's mentioned in interviews this album gives him closure
over a period that he wants to move on from.
