Does anyone like Doves? If you haven't got their debut
'Lost Souls' I suggest you get it. You might die soon never
having heard it. New album is on the way and new single out
now.

They were formally Sub Sub.

Why've I heard of sub sub? am I thinking of something else?
Must've been the toys I played with in the bath last
night.... :)

Seriously... I've heard of them but I cant place it.

They were a dance band who did 'Ain't No Love' with Melanie
Williams in the early 90s. Their studio burnt down and then
they started making the most beautiful guitar music. Most of
their stuff is insrumental and really locks into a groove,
hence the previous dance incarnation. They are a million
miles away from crap indie guitar music and you should buy
their album. You need it.

I bought the new album yesterday. I'm a bit disappointed.
What do people think? Have you got it?

Have you got Lost Souls? If not, I can't recommend it highly
enough.

One of my friends did a little work with them a couple of
years ago.
I will try and get hold of him but I don't hold out much
hope. The last I heard of him he was being an archaeologist
in Ireland.

Really? When they were Sub Sub?

Lost Souls is a fan-fucking-tastic album... I mean just
listen to how nice "The Man Who Told Everything" is. Its
even better live!

Wow. I've actually found someone on here who has it. They
are amazing and i know people here would love that album.
They lock into a groove and have similar dynamics to a lot
of downtempo IDM stuff.

Do you like Mogwai?

Mogwai..? They're local. :)

A local band for local people.

Yeah. They're a great band IMO.

It was about 5 years a go so I guess they were still doves.
I'm not too sure if it was all of them or just the one. I
can remeber him saying it was like a collective. He was in
Glasgow at the time. Does that figure?

All I know about them is that they're from Manchester and
were previously called Sub Sub. They had a hit with Melanie
Williams called 'Ain't No Love' in early nineties. Then
their studio burnt down and they formed a guitar band called
Doves.

Manchester hey???Interesting!
I haven't managed to get hold of my mate to get more info. I
am seeing an old friend this weekend I shall ask if he knows
any more.
PS Jonesy do you like the scratching scene? (no silyy jokes)
I noticed you like vinyl.

You mean turntablism right? Q-Bert, Invisibl Scratch Picklz,
Mixmaster Mike? I'm not up on that stuff.

Yeah, I mostly buy vinyl as its cheap in some of the shops
here. I mostly buy deep house and downtempo jazzy stuff. I
think they call it broken beat or nu-jazz. I like
electronica but don't cane it all the time. What do you
listen to?

Difficult question. I have hunderds of records spanning all
sorts of genres. I pretty much like instrmental stuff. I
guess that's the only unifying quality in the stuff I listen
to.

In fact that is bollocks I love hip hop. Hmmm yeah I like
JAzz, hip hop, funk, northern soul, electro, detroit techno
etc..etc...

I hate lists but here's some of the stuff I really love
(talk of Aphex Twin is getting tedious):

Jazzanova
Cinematic Orchestra
Kruder & Dorfmeister
Tosca
Badly Drawn Boy
DJ Shadow
Faze Action
Thievery Corp.
Aqua Bassino
Madkatt Courtship
Miles Davis
Sasha
Presence

I always look out for stuff on the labels:

F-Comm
G-Stone
Nuphonic
Compost
Naked Records

Love Doves! From my town too! Had the same music teacher as
them in school (who they tell to shove a recorder up his
arse in the sleeve of Lost Souls) but I prefer The Last
Broadcast. They're one of the most decent current bands by
far I reckon.

I liked them for a bit last year, but they got boring pretty
quickly. NME over-bone them, as always.

I dunno think their production is lush and quite refreshing
to be honest. Better than Franz Ferdinand and all that
average shit in the charts.

They did have good production granted. It think it was the
singer's voice that put me off eventually, its not the most
charismatic. Having said all that I actually own a doves
t-shirt I bought at leeds last year, still wear it
occasionally :P

The only track I know is Here It Comes (if thats the title)
Very good, its on a uk skate video called First Broadcast
which is wicked as its all really grim and rainy but with
really chilled music, also has a track by plaid amongst
others.

I should check out more then, before I kark it.

ramble on...
