When I try and produce, why is it that I feel as if I am
attempting to win the affection of a diseased crack whore
streetwalker with expensive gifts and fine jewlery

You feel that way, perhaps it is because you are attempting
to win the affection of a diseased crack whore streetwalker
with expensive gifts and fine jewelry.

Aren't you meant to be pleasing yourself?

the total control that is the good side and bad side of it
leaves you burning ever closer toward the pathetic, simple,
and stupid center of yourself

i feel the community itself is largely to blame, seeming to
prefer internal competition over innovation. most of the new
technology has already been seen through to its potential,
and i feel like most of the "innovation" these days is not
actually such, just the result of re-hashing
jealously-guarded gems from decades ago. hello acid, hello
italo, hello everything. if it's obscure enough, it feels
new. then the next step is to be a bitter old alcoholic, but
disguise this by being "cool" and always "wearing
sunglasses." this activates patterns of social abuse that
got laid in during junior high: only cool people are allowed
to be abusive, so if they're abusing you, they must be
cooler than you.

so, end result, bunch of jerks treating each other like shit
and trying to out crate-dive each other, soundcloud groups
become jealous cliques that are the artistic equivalent of
marvin the paranoid photocopier.

solution: quit xlt, quit watmm, quit the internet, and
remember why (i hope) you started this shit on the first
place: because, once you disconnect it from all this misery,
it's a hell of a lot of fun. it can make getting out of bed
worth it, even on the worst days. a pity it's become such a
shitfest.

this is not about spam. i'll be a dick myself, i admit, but
i feel that's also just the attitude i'm used to carrying on
this corner of the web. it's not a problem until you catch
yourself being a dick for no reason. like, i was giving that
joe litrenta guy shit because he was spewing loads of it,
and it was lazy shite. some guy's acid track, though,
whatever -- no reason to be nasty there, right? instead, you
have the bitter miserable drunks like ddrummondd duking it
out with some guy that types like he took too much E without
a helmet. HOSTILE ACID ENVIRONMENT, man. lurking is fun, get
to watch them chew on each other instead of me.

at first i wanted to offer something helpful about making
music, but then i realized you were saying your music is
fine jewelry and forum members are diseased whores. either
way just get off the laptop and on to a new piece of gear,
even if just a control surface and it will help. i might
get an akai rhythm wolf, and believe it or not i might be as
interested in m-audio's trigger finger as maschine mikro,
but the point is having soft or standalone sequencing
options.

sounds like good advice, I quite fancy getting something
next month. rhythm wolf looks fun, is there anything else
you'd recommend?

my buddy just got Korg's volca beats and bass, for the price
they are nice little units.

Roland's Aira series looks nice, recreations of their
classic lines like the TR-8 and TB-3.

My buddy is pretty sure he wants to get an Octatrack, but
that is an investment there. Can't wait to chain it to my Q
if he does though.

Gotherman's Little Deformer was something I was looking at
too.

Right now I'd be happy just to finish paying off my debt
from having to suddenly buy a car and move. I feel like an
idiot really, I've easily put $20k into this
electro-bullshit over the last ten years and I've gotten
exactly $0 back out. Something something get a fuckin'
job... just because this stuff is personally and emotionally
valuable to me does not mean it's financially worth a shit
to anyone else, it's admittedly been a bit hard on my ego.
Then on top of that, it's just a very cuntish atmosphere in
general. I would honestly be happy never making a dime as
long as taking the time to do music didn't in turn put me in
dire financial straights, and I could even take the debt if
I felt like people appreciated it. Instead, last album I
posted just got some vague insults, then a few weeks later
the modular I spent over a hundred hours working on shorted
out, and fuck you, I don't have another 30 hours to fix
this, I have fucking debt. So forgive me if I'm a bit sour
at the moment, and have jettisoned shit like XLT to keep
myself sane.

You sound like an idiot for complaining so much. Your
perspective is up your arse. But it's really sounding like
you enjoy it so there's nothin anybody can say to placate
that. I thought you were a bit smarter than that. Have a
hang sangwich and relax

Shrug. I never really did explain myself on the way out, and
with this thread I was like, well, out with it then.

I'm not really even sure why I care to explain myself. I
guess it's just self-indulgence, really, but more bordering
on some needed catharsis. I don't want donations or anything
like that; I'm sure I'd get a bit but unless it pays rent
I'd rather save that goodwill for something more useful. I
suppose it'd be nice if I could get some actual paying work
in music, but, well, I know things are tough all over and
all that. I've unplugged all the gear and focused on work;
things ARE getting taken care of but I feel incredibly foul
and sour about it.

Thank you therapist xlt. This should go brilliantly into Ms.
Monoid's PhD Thesis on Nerd Shit.

I gave up on any idea of having a career making music, and
to be honest I make more honest stuff and enjoy it a lot
more because of it. There are really, really good producers
who have a thousand or two followers on soundcloud and even
they have day jobs. I put money into it now for the same
reason I'd by any collectible.

If you have a large collection of gear you do have something
that a lot of producers don't though, who maybe only have
their laptop, an ipad or control surface, etc. We have
pieces of gear that no other machine sounds just like on
their own, not to mention used modularly. Sample packs
could be a way to make some money off of it and still keep
it and even buy more. Something I've thought about myself.

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2014-03-22 19:06 [#02469134]

The career thing wasn't bothering me at all until I found
myself without enough free time to fix my gear, then later,
to do any music at all. In the middle of that my modular
sharted out, which felt like a cosmic fuck-you from the
gods, to be honest. I've had a few pieces of gear break, but
not like that. Whatever, put them on the shelf until I get
some more time, ya? The modular was just rather central and
symbolic, something that was entirely mine, but now it's
busted, and I don't have time to fix it, at which point it
starts getting like "well no one gives a shit anyways."

There are things I could do like make a sample library or a
VST, yes, but those also require significant amounts of free
time to do properly -- like music. They're not even
guaranteed to make me anything, unlike my
boring-but-sufficient day job.

you would be in a much better position you smelly little

You're absolutely right, which is why I've essentially
banned myself from everything but the slow-as-snails ROY
forum. In harder times the nature of this place is too much
for me, but around summer 2012 I was having a shitload of
fun here.

Here's an idea: Hire me to fix this board. All the broken
shit. Believe it or not, it's actually about what I do for a
living anyways. But then, either it's not bullshit and
phobiazero is spazzy and unreliable, or it is bullshit and
doing something like hiring me to fix this shit would ruin
the charade. I figure no dice either way. But I'll leave it
on the table at least.

That's not all true. Epic's feeling like shit and so
obviously is thinking about himself too much, the two go
hand in hand. Some people here do care though so you can
stick that up your arse

ultimate and u wont be shown false at all costs even if u
