I can't listen to spoken word and read something, and absorb
both.

Isn't multitasking supposed to be a myth, anyway?

that's the thing, if you split it up to be 'multi', you r
like 'oh i'm concentrating on THAT one now, forgot the other'
but if you can somehow merge the two things into one
hmm,bit drunk,going out now:)

go! You wouldn't let it lie!

Watching films with subtitles and knowing the spoken
language is a weird one for me. I can't help but diss agree
with the translation. I remember watching 'Downton Abbey'
(not by choice) and some said "Golly!" which was translated
to "JESUS CHRIST!"

That constantly happens in Dutch translations. It's clear
that the translators have little grasp of local
colloquialisms, and just go for a ridiculously direct
translation. I can never remember a good example.

I think I would watch Downton Abbey if they shouted
JEEEEESUS CHRIST more.

Come to think of it, what I do like to do is to play
videogames and listen to podcasts at the same time. But
neither has to be involving, or have any real narrative,
then one will pull focus from the other.

With just the right game, and just the right podcast, it is
possible to reach a kind of mindless singularity.

One that used to work for me was playing a Zelda game on my
DS, while watching Masterchef on tv. I think I actually
drooled one time.

Hahah. I once got the notion into my head while drunk that
it would be possible to cycle a bike and urinate off it
while in motion without any collateral damage, with the
right kind of assisting breeze. A year or two down the line
I was cycling home drunk after work through a park at around
5am, and decided to give it a go. I got everything lined up
and unzipped, and had my planned leg and flute angles in
effect, with the workspace oriented left, while my right leg
and arm each continued to pedal and steer the bike; sadly,
it was a pretty cold night and the temperature meant my
contracted urethra and pelvic muscles were not as ready as
the rest of me to make good on the plan. So it was I had to
stop the bike and release a shuddering, defeated piss
against a tree. Maybe I'll give it a go another time with
some warmer air conditions

listening to music... i can play video games while holding a
conversation and listening to music at the same time. i can
poop, smoke and surf the interweb all at the same time. i
can play hockey while listening to my headphones and making
a grocery list in my head. i can pat my head, rub my belly

Yeah it's weird.

The worst is when something has been dubbed. You end up with
two actors for one character. It's terrible.

I'm a different person depending on what language i speak.

To answer the thread, i can do it but i'd rather focus on
one thing. Often if i'm reading and start to think about
something else, i drift off and don't even register what
i've read.

Yes!

I was reading a book in english while a football game was on
telly with french commentators this afternoon. It was
alright but it seems your minds favours an option and gives
it more attention.

Women are supposed to be better than men at this, right?
There's that old joke that they can't have sex with a
headache though! (terrible)

I think that's also a myth, the women are better at
multitasking thing.

Wikipedia's section on multitasking and gender sends me to
this article, which rounds up several studies and
basically says there's little difference. There's more
difference between subjects within one gender, in fact.

It's similar to disengaging and still managing to talk with
someone - good for small talk.

I tend to disengage my mind when small talk is necessary,
and because the questions are so generic, you can autopilot
the answers.
