CD/ record collection, or just mp3s?

when you say you have a CD collection, do you mean that you
have the real thing, or just the mp3s burnt? i think if you
just have the mp3s, you should state that. anybody and
everybody can download hundreds of mp3s (and have done so
for the last two years or more), so what is the point in
bragging about that? i think that is different from
actually collecting the original cds and vinyl.

I have like maybe 20 mp3's... the rest is the real cd...
maybe if I had a bigger harddrive I would download more, but
I don't so I buy...

yeah, most of my mp3s on this computer are ripped, because i
have a 28.8 modem still. grr. but i usually talk about
owning them. other wise i say "i have a burnt copy" or
something of the like.

I still have a collection of over 750 cassettes. And now I
don't even have a player in my car. I have a lot of cds and
mp3s. I spend a lot of money just buying the cd of what I
already have on cassette. It's a collector's trap.

I will always buy the real thing cause of the collecting
value. The album art and liner notes and such.

i feel that i should only get trax on mp3 that r difficult
to obtain in CD or vinyl units. that's y i'm waiting for the
new autechre untitled EP to come out on CD to hear it. i am
convinced that it is somehow more satisfying that way.

I love the whole idea of trying to search for an extremely
rare cd or 12". It makes collecting so much more satisfying.

I totally think it is... it really makes for a great
listening experiene when you wait for it to come out, go to
the store to buy it, and listen to it on the way home, or
when you get home... it's great... the anticipation is
great...

There is nothing like going to a record store and
unexpectedly finding something you have been searching a
long time for.....it's one of those special moments. :)

yes man, it is... I remember when I got Surfing on Sine
Waves... you have to understand that it's really hard to get
IDM here, and so for me to find this cd in a store here was
really something... I went to the store, and the guy there
pointed it out to me... I was like "Sweet!!!"... I think he
wanted to buy it, but he shouldn't have pointed it out to
me... :)

The only bad part is that I always justify using a credit
card for the purchase. Like it is an emergency.

If I can hear the music, I OWN the music. Maybe I was a
thief in a past life, but I don't give a shit about owning
the actual albums anymore. If I have the MP3, or have a CD-R
of an album, I ''own'' the album. As long as I can listen to
it...

I have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of CDs, but
I haven't bought one in months, I'm now 100% MP3/CD-R.

As for the ''bragging'' thing, I don't brag about my MP3s,
nor would I brag about if I had the actual CDs... I don't
really care about that, they're both the same to me. I don't
care about buying it or the materials the album is made of,
I just want the sound. And a good MP3 bitrate is almost
perfect, the difference is neglibible... of course a 64 or
128er will sound noticeably worse...

That's cool that buying the real thing gives you a charge,
but I've bought CDs before, I know what it's like... the
feeling is the same when I get something off Soulseek or
Audiogalaxy. Plus, I save 20 bucks to spend on treats and
shit instead of an album. :-)

Zombiekev mentioned hiding stuff in cd stores. I hide my
stuff in the Tejano/Spanish section. Here in Texas, every
store has this section, but nobody ever messes with it, so
my stuff is relatively safe.

Right now I have Praga Khan (Mutant Funk), Miles Davis
(Bitch's Brew), Biohazard and Die Warsau hidden.

I have to side with Ophecks; MP3/CD-Rs are the the way to
go. I do collect the CDs, but I have no objection to the
CD-R, either. I don't have all the money in the world; I
just need the music! I don't own a record player, so
anything on vinyl I need in mp3 form. And then so many
things are rare, or extremely expensive. Ordering from the
'net is timely and shipping and handling is murder
sometimes. And then on top of all this, I hate Jewel cases.
I keep all my discs in books and binders--none of those
miserable, plastic contraptions for me. Suppose I need to
load three CDs in a hurry--I don't have time to fumble
through stacks and stacks of Jewel cases!
