up until recently, i'd not spent much time looking at maps.
by the time i had my own car, mapquest was already a fact of
life. just type it in; the computer crunches some graph
edges and spits out an optimized route. why even bother
trying to beat it?

then, all at once, i moved, i got a smartphone, and i got a
car that wasn't dying piece of shit. new neighborhood is a
zorkland of twisty little passages all alike; and it seems
to regularly thwart google maps. bad road choices and
inaccurate time estimates.... meanwhile, on my new phone,
google maps + google earth are both pretty slick, so i began
messing around with them a bunch.

a couple weeks ago, i was sitting on the sofa, doing just
that -- studying maps on my phone.

which direction is north?
where is my house on the street?
where is the street in the neighborhood?
where is the neighborhood in the town?
where is the town in the county?
where is the county in the state?
where is the US is the state?
where in the world is the US?
OK, i can't zoom out any further....

it hit me how oddly god-like it feels to be able to do this.
then it got even stranger, once i began to memorize these
recursive frames of reference.

with the maps loaded into my brain, i can close my eyes,
descend from outer space to where i'm sitting. i begin to
feel like i'm outside of my body. perhaps i am a tachikoma.

in any case, this is proof that the internet and the google
corporation is becoming stranger than drugs. and i have a
much more visceral sense of where north is at all times.

android is bad enough and getting worse; kitkat will be even
more google-ized. meanwhile, what android is slowly losing,
iOS never fucking had in the first place.

for the obvious aresoles who haven't got a clue as to which
is the right way up..

in australian schools they have 2 maps of the world 1 of
which reverses the northern and southern hemisphere.

pricks who are serious about this (probably no-one but you
never know how fucking stupid some ppl are) would learn a
lot if they did the same.
