i think there's also a real issue regarding what to do with these poor sods once they become damaged. carbon monoxide poisoning is just as bad as lead poisoning. or, maybe mum was an alcoholic, crackhead prostitute, and you're not lucky enough to be wesley willis, etc.... the damage cases wind up on the streets or in the pokey if they're bad enough. as such, they sort of get swept under the rug, and this makes it much easier for people to ignore whatever's causing the damage. things like carcinogens and mad cow are the worst, because they're slow-burn and impossible to directly link to anything. meanwhile, the greedy fucks that will do anything to make a buck seem to be doing rather well these days. but, hey, capitalism ayn rand blah blah |
