only preset autoriddim at discrete tempo intervals. the preset rhythms don't bother me nearly as much as being unable to set the tempo more precisely! if you circuit bend it you can get good drum solos with a reasonable degree of control. maybe there's a way to monkey with the tempo, too -- anyone know? however, for keys -- it will remember ~400 notes via 3-track sequencer. however, it's confined to the stupid tempo limits, and there's no loop. so, if you program up a 16 bar loop, you have to press auto play again every 16 bars. it would be amazing if i could clock that off a gate pulse, and have it loop. it would be like the sh101 for 8bit sampling. meanwhile, it also has a "synthesis" mode, where it lets you use a primitive form of additive sequencing to create a synth tone. it has a bunch of preset envelopes, which work on the samples as well as the synth. even been discovering tricks to get cleaner recordings out of it. all in all, it's pretty deep for something most people write off as a toy. thanks to the sampling capability, i don't think it will ever get old... especially once i bend it further. |

yeah I had one as a teen and I used it in some of my earliest trackxxx. I used the sequencer and synth a lot, and I sampled the fuck out of the beats. I really wish I didn't bust it up because I probably would have eventually learnt how to circuit-bend using it. Alas I have no free time now for that kind of shit, even for just making any tunez at all these days :'-( |

added a gate input to sk-1. this track is entirely with the sk-1's mini sequencer; i'm not playing the keys live. akai mpc as midi clock through fatman to a gate signal to the sk-1. skype call briefly interrupts in the middle because i left the fader up. |

resistance is futile. all samples will become brutal digital noise. solo 1 and solo 2 programmed, "swing" autoriddim. mfb step64 triggering one key play button independently of sk-1 tempo, then paia fatman and korg ms2000 as aux fx (also driven by mfb step64), later some other reverb and delay. separate voice outs (4 synth, 1 riddim) to mixer. my three usual bend switches etc. plus some bendport fiddling at the end. sample is from nin's "satellite;" not that you can tell. |
