Okay- so I listened to som' dis shiz... Well, here's my totally 1 minute impression of everything I listened to: It's aiiight. Nothing too forward, but the vibe of disco plus Steely Dan, Toto, The Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross et al is really strong. Considering that most pop nowadays doesn't have that vibe, I think it's nice that ze kids are being introduced to some of that shit, which would get them into the classics. I think Daft Punk realized the lack of disco+chill vibe in pop culture, so they wanted to bring it back. I feelin' dat sentiment.
A lotta pop nowadays is influencing minds to party and not care about shit and be reckless and whatever, but maybe some of the aforementioned influences will re-direct minds towards a more calm lifestyle. The late 70's early 80's vibe of driving slowly down the road overlooking a beach, enjoying the wind and sunset, taking things slow... Like, "it feels so warm and lovely inside to think about my new girl, looking at her polaroid, listening to her mixtape, and enjoying this icy drink on this hot day is just great", as opposed to the modern pop vibe of, "I'm gonna fuck the shit out of your bitch, and tits over there is gonna perform for me that fucking slut ho muthafuck, then I'm gonna bash some dude's head in with a bottle and then breakdance to this bassline cuz this e-ket-poppers-whisky is peaking like a muthafucker, then after my headspin you two random hot ass rich bitches are gonna suck my dick simul while I get an ironic tattoo on my bicep in this inner-private-jet hot tub filled with wine and glitter"
If Daft Punk's album can help with spreading a calm vibe, then they are influencing the world for the positive. Kudoz.

'Random Access Memories,' from Daft Punk, is extremely ambitious and wildly inconsistent. It raises a radical question: Does good music need to be good?"

i'm softening up a bit now that i have the whole album.
i guess i get what they're trying to do -- make an italo disco record. i remember they have "digital love" on homework or whatever and it sounds like "cybernetic love" by casco and now they want to make their own casco record. i find this to be more self-indulgent than clever or generous. it will only increase the mindless humping of the 80s that's shitting all over electronic music right now.
some of the tracks hit for me, but i'm not a fan of... i dunno, make-out music? the music they use during "tender" moments on MTV? so, despite the production, the overall tone of the songwriting still kills most of it for me.... as well as the vocoders, which stick out like a sore thumb next to all the old-skool production. all that quality funk bass playing, wasted.
bottom line: sounds smooth, but so does kenny g

thought / listened a bit more.
on the retro italo disco angle: i just hope this is a stepping stone to something greater. go back, do an album the old way. take what you learn into the present, and use it to show us the future the album after that. i'd also be okay if the daft punks did it because they were bored + it seemed interesting, like rich housewives taking up painting bowls of fruit. or, it might just be because they're out of ideas, and have their helmets up their ass. who knows.
on the actual album: this album reminds me of car salesmen. they call you by your first name, act all buddy-buddy, and casually pry for information they can leverage, trying to figure out what you want to hear. similarly, this feels like an album i'd put on while trying to talk my way into a girl's pants. while i'm fine with using it for this purpose, i have no desire to listen to it purely for the sake of listening to it, just like i don't hang out with car salesmen unless i want to buy a car.

i put on franz ferdinand yesterday, and i think they do a much better job of playing disco with "real" instruments. they can do it on stage, too; they don't need five years in the studio. also the songwriting is better.
but i figure everyone here is too insecure to enjoy franz ferdinand, given the dismal failure of my black keys topic.

I don't care about Homework, it's good, but for me Discovery is the shit. As for this new album, I have always liked Daft Punks penchant for disco and 70's pop sounds, but on this album it all seems so laid back from what I've heard. I miss the faster beats and tempos.
Also, while the production is all nice and has a real life band feel, I kind of don't want them being a live band, which I guess is weird. Seems I wanted Discovery 2.
I probably need more listens.

i like both homework and discovery a lot. 1/3 - 2/5 of the tracks on both are skippers, but i can forgive those due to the strength of the rest. i suppose it also sounds a bit repetitive to modern ears, but most of the ears here still wear bellbottoms.
i think you're dead on, funkmaster, but it'd be Discovery 2.0, not Discovery 2. no one wants the same thing, they want to be charmed like they were in 1999, and that's where it gets complicated. some people will never be happy, because nostalgia always has those saturated misty-morning colors and reality doesn't. on the other hand, those memories can also make people love anything daft punk puts out, even if it's dogshit. most people fall somewhere in between.
either way, i'm not sure going in the direction went in was the right move. it doesn't sound like daft punk, which is what i think funkmaster was getting at. might have made sense to do it all under a different name. it'd still get plenty of press, unless they did it anonymously.
saying "oh they went back to the roots" is lazy thinking, to me. they went back and did something that was done to death, something that died in the 80s. no point in doing again unless you're going to bring it into the future. it's like using tape, i guess -- it shouldn't be done out of some masochistic purism or because it's "cool," but because it adds something to the finished product.
so, like i said, i hope they just did this to soak it up, and the next album will be like Discovery, except they made all their own samples. that could be quite good.

re-reading that, i want to clarify: the production sounds plenty modern, and not 80s at all. but the style feels like a boring imitation of much better funk/disco tracks....

Sooo in general... Is everyone waiting for a good house album to come out, or what? This is still a huge hole in the scene. Not shit house. Good house. Garage/2 Step/House never really matured, because it kept on branching out into diluted pop.
Or maybe it's just wishful thinking, hoping for someone to be better than Fatboy Slim, and make it 2015, all whilst not being cliche, overly poppy, or overly retro.
How everything becomes acid, supports the 303 Truther Movement that Roland is actually selling $3 hardware for hundreds/thousands of dollars, claiming to be sold by other sellers, claiming to be made in a time prior to the present. The 303 Truther theory is that there are now 20 times more 303s in existence than there were just 17 years ago.
Missing the shuffle, J Dawg Wilkinz
